Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Dogs? Coyotes? killed my only 3 females alpacas left, help with any information

Well, I'm one of those people who gets very sad seeing a squirrel or
possum or skunk, cat, raccoon, etc. that was killed by stupid pig
drivers that can't slow down. And I get sad seeing all those cute
baby calves every year at the farm down the road, knowing what their
fate will be. Every life is important, and our alpacas do become our
family, just like a cat or dog. Heck, I love my hens like pets, too!

Anyway, we're here. Although I don't know where everyone actually is,
the internet is very slow tonight for some reason!

Just Thank you for being their. When I told some people today what happened, they looked at me like I was crazy for crying over an animal. It helps alot to know I can come here and talk to other people that understand. Thank you so much.

Oh good lord. If your insurance was through Prairie States or
Wilkins, I imagine that unless you had a "named peril" policy, that
this ought to be covered.

Please don't give up. I remember hearing about some people who lost
their entire herd to roaming neighborhood dogs a few years ago. It
took a while to recover emotionally, but they have alpacas again.

I wish there was something I could say...

Thnak You Heather for your kind words. I think I have already given up. I don't see a way to buy more females. Thank you again and God Bless.

And also, I apologise for the "to the point-ness" of my last post.

I am so very very sorry for your loss. We've had alpacas for 11 years
now and have lost our share. Thank god we've never had a dog or
coyote attack, but any death in the herd is so painful. I love every
one of ours and it breaks my heart if anything happens to them. You
have everyone's group hugs, here.

Please don't give up. Do check your fences and gates. You may need to
re-do the fencing. 6 foot no-climb horse fencing is preferred, or
diamond mesh, which I prefer. We have 5 foot no climb, and when I
hear the coyotes across the valley, I get nervous. And if you have
panel gates, you can attach chain link or fence wire to it so that no
one can get through. Heck, even chicken wire is a barrier!

I hope others will chime in.

Hugs,
Heather

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Dogs? Coyotes? killed my only 3 females alpacas left, help with any information

Oh how horrible. I agree with the vet, it was more likely dogs than
coyotes. I don't think coyotes kill for sport.

Where are you located? It's nice to know who we're talking to.

I hate to bring it up, but I hope the ones that were still being paid
for were insured... Usually it's a requirement of the payment
agreement that the animal will be insured during the payment period.

If it is dogs who killed your alpacas, the owners are responsible for
monetary damages. If you can catch the dogs, especially if they go
after your llamas, you have a chance at restitution.

Before you think about getting any more alpacas, you need to find the
place the dogs got into your pastures. If your fences are not secure,
the dogs will be back and will continue to kill any animals in your
pastures. I do hope you have chain link gates or something of that
sort. Dogs and coyotes can certainly go right through cattle gates
and panel gates. And your gates need to be right almost on the ground
so dogs can't squeeze underneath.

After your fences and gates are secure, I'll tell you, right now is a
good time to buy, lots of incredible bargains out there for alpaca
due to the economy.

Best of luck,
Heather

I agree with Patty. I vaccinate my own animals and I always space them out them and my vet supports that and he said to maybe wait a few days to worm if you have given (several) vaccines. Unless you given many vaccines worming should'nt hurt.
