Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: fertilizing pastures

The idea is that we will sell the premix, which is the vitamin/mineral
mix, to the person who will act as that region's distributor. They will
provide it to their mill, who will agree to make the pelleted feed
according to our mill's recipe.

RE: [AlpacaTalk] Re: fertilizing pastures

Heather-

Is this in a pellet form or ground mix? We have our feed custom made at a
local mill, but I am very interested in your feed. How are you proposing
letting us use our own mills to manufacture the feed?

Yes, this is becoming bigger than we imagined it would. I'd like to
invite everyone to look at this page
http://www.westwind <http://www.westwindalpacas.com/feed.html>
alpacas.com/feed.html
to see what I'm talking about with the fleece improvements. And to see
what poor quality corn and grain by-product feeds can do to your
alpacas' fleeces. And of course we all know that hair health is an
indicator of overall general health in humans as well as every other
animal.

I am talking with a woman in Ohio who would like to start having this
feed milled in her area by a local custom mill. We have had a lot of
interest all over the country in this, and really, this is only way to
have this work since shipping "less than truckload" units is
ridiculously expensive. FedEx freight quoted me at over $950 to ship a
1 ton pallet from Eugene to Tacoma last week. Well, that's more than
the feed itself costs, so that won't work!

So, if anyone is really interested in researching to find a custom mill
in their area, preferably organic certified, who can produce the feed
according to our ingredient specs and not cost based, let me know. We
think this feed should be available nationwide.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: fertilizing pastures

Hi Margie,
On the WABA pellet, Scirocco's fleece blew out from AFD:16.6 SD:3.0
CV:18.1 on his first clip at 10 months to AFD:22.8 SD:4.3 CV:18.6 in
exactly one year. Now, at almost 3 years, his microns tested at
AFD:24.1 SD:4.4 CV:18.3. I'm still not satisfied with the micron, but
the character has improved so tremendously that I'm acknowledging that
24.1 is pretty good for a 3rd year micron on a dark rose grey breeding
male.

Hi Heather,
Do you have histograms for 2006 and 2007 for Scirocco's fleece?

Thanks,

[AlpacaTalk] Re: fertilizing pastures

Peter,

I have contacted the ag agent for my county and he is not at all
informed regarding alpacas and the forages that could be dangerous for
them (at least my local agent). I thought by asking the other breeders
I might get a wider scope of what I might be able to use.

The other question my vet asked me was to find out the selenium content
of my soil. He said he didn't want to say why, but to ask the ag agent
and then tell him what he said. Vet is on vacation and so I have to
wait to show him the study they gave me. Anyone know about selenium?

The other concern I have is we have what is called Gippy water (gypsum
levels are high here) and I wondered if that affects the plant growth.
No, I won't be watering with it, we have plenty of rain this year! We
have city water so will use that if necessary.
