[AlpacaTalk] Horses and Alpacas?

Hello all! We're in the "educational phase" of alpacas and trying to
decide if it's something we'd like to get into. We just purchased a
6 acre mini farm and exploring our options at this time.

We've been reading every piece of information we can get our hands
on and get more excited with every turn of the page!

Our first question is ... can you have alpacas and horses in the
same pasture together?

Second ... the property we purchased mainly housed horses so it is
very much a "horse pasture". Is there anything we can do to make it
more alpaca friendly? All the pics we see are of beautiful green
pastures (unlike what we currently have)

Thanks in advance

[AlpacaTalk] Re: camelid vet

Janice, just an off-handed thought. Maybe the cattle vet and his wife are
having martial problems that is spilling over into his practice.

I hope you do find a vet in your area soon....

[AlpacaTalk] Tis the cold season for alpacas!

It is funny to think of an alpaca having a cold, but, they do and
they can get runny noses and coughs just like we humans. I was at my
job and was cleaning and heard an alpaca cough, it was pretty loud.

I was helping my husband to trim hooves today, and when we did
Cocoa's hooves, he just laid his head on my shoulder and I gave him
lots of kisses while he stood there. He is my favorite alpaca there
on the place, hands down. I hope that they never sell him, cause I
would just cry.

Well, it was cute to see little Diamond being introduced to the rest
of the babies and mamas, with his birth, that makes eight total crias
now that we have on the farm. 6 white babies, 1 reddish-brown, and 1
suri that it fawn over white.

The new puppy that they got is a riot to have around and he used to
take the alpaca food dishes out to the field and play with them and
then it became not so funny when we went to feed the alpacas and had
to chase down food bowls, he got his butt slapped for doing it. He
was also shown the dish and told very sternly <NO>!

The couple that owns the place are some of the nicest people that you
could ever hope to meet.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] trimming feet etc

hi - you are asking what we do with their teeth? everytime we do their feet, shots etc, we check their teeth to see if all is well - sometimes baby teeth haven't fallen out and are causing "bite" problems, and sometimes teeth have grown too long and need trimming - also the fighting teeth of adult males need to be removed so they don't hurt each other - the man who was helping us had invented a gizmo that fit over the teeth and neatly and ;quickly buzzed them off - it smelled like the dentist's drill, but it was quick and therefore less stressful for the alpaca - now that we are on our own, i ordered the only "teeth trimming" equipment i could find online, and we have two handles with a wire connected to each - apparantly the process is to wrap the wire around the teeth and saw back and forth until the trimming is complete - i can't see us doing this without really distressing our animals - so i guess now it will be one more thing i pay the vet to do

we have a great vet - he is a horse vet with quite a bit of alpaca/llama experience and very nice - the problem is he has his clinic in another town and only comes to our valley one day a week - if there is an emergency, it will take him at least an hour to get here, IF he is available at all

the only time i've called in an emergency was when i had a cria born, prematurely to a first-time mom - baby was clearly in distress but the vet was on the other end of the island and "busy all day" - he didn't call me back until the next day, which would have been way to late for this cria. We have no large animal vets at all here in the valley.

But the cost of a vet visit is hard on a small-time farmer like me so i am trying to learn how to deal with whatever i can, on our own.
Does anyone else have a method for dealing with teeth that they can pass on?

I'll be interested in any answers to Wendy's dilemma as I am in the same
boat. Except I have never had any help (single female) and my pacas only get
their feet trimmed once a year at shearing time. This spring they didn't get
sheared at all and therefore have not had their feet trimmed in 1 1/2 yrs and they
look bad.
I have Marty's book but do not have the luxury of time to spend with mine to
get them to the point where I can trim their feet while they are standing.
They are for the most part very tame and easy to handle but will not stand for
having the legs or feet messed with.

And may I ask, please forgive my ignorance, what you do with their teeth?
You say you have had help with their feet, teeth, etc.

I am not a professional alpaca farmer and currently only have 4. I have mine
for pleasure and fiber and love them dearly but don't have much time or money
to devote to them.

Thanks, Janice

Re: [AlpacaTalk] shearing table

hi - the heat here in the valley is intense during the summer, so even when i have my alpacas sheared in May, by July they are too hot. I bought plastic kiddie wading pools for each paddock and the alpacas love them - they climb in and lay down to cool off - sometimes if there is too much bickering, i have to put two pools in - these are a cheap solution, less than $20 each - i also put the sprinklers on for them, or go out and hose them down in the afternoon - they are so cute, dancing under the spray - they make me laugh everytime i'm out there with them.

I would also like to find out more about the shearing table you can lean them against, restrain them before they go horizontal - it's the manhandling to get them "on" the shearing table i object to,

this ongoing alpaca conversation has been wonderful - i have learned so much this weekend, and gained some confidence too

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] shearing table

I am really appreciating all the discussion lately on alpaca heatlh. I had
signed onto this list back in the summer when I lost my female and then the
baby. A computer friend (I am not a computer or internet person) did some
searching for me, altho she knows nothing about alpacas, and found this list for me
and some info on BVD somewhere which she suggested from her reading might be a
problem in my herd. But the list seemed to be only about alpacas for sale
and was otherwise silent. I am so appreciative of the posts this week. It is
so helpful to read what others do and to know there is a wealth of support and
info available.

But this post is to request any information on a shearing table. In the past
I have hired someone to come over and shear my alpacas. He is getting too
expensive and I could not have it done this summer. It was extremely hot and
extremely stressful summer. I ended up hosing them down 2x a day and purchasing
a huge industrial fan and running a long extension cord out to the woods for
them (this alone cost me as much as the shearing would have!). It is clear
that I *must* begin doing these tasks myself. As mentioned in another post the
only time they get their toenails trimmed is when they are being sheared. The
guy that does this for me is very gentle; he uses a huge soft rubber mat and
tie out stakes to tie their legs. Still it takes both his wife and myself to
hold the pacas gently but firmly and be soothing them while he works. I do
the nail trimming myself. So I know I can do it ..... when they are restrained.

I have heard there is a table you walk them up to and lean them on and then
it goes horizontal and I guess you somehow restrain them on it. It sounds
quite expensive to me. Can anyone here tell me more?

Anyway, it is really a relief to be able to communicate with other paca
people. I am just a small hobby alpaca lover who desparately wants to keep them
happy, healthy and alive!

Thanks, Janice
