Re: [AlpacaTalk] overweight people and their animals

Janice,
It is soooo nice to hear an educated persons view on the human overweight struggles.  I too struggle with that battle.  My critters weight is maintained by me yet I can't do the same for myself.  What you have said here makes so much sense and nice to hear :)

<<<Now me......I can't seem to control what I eat.
THAT is where I know it's psycological forces at work. That and lack of
exercise, other than farm chores. One of my alpacas has trouble gaining
weight. So he gets the extras.

Congrats Susan on keeping your animals from being overweight! That
means you are conscious and making conscious choices and
decisions.....that's a huge step up (from unconsciousness). And I
don't mean to imply that you were ever unconscious - but many struggling
with weight issues are. Being overweight is a huge battle and a tough
one to win. I am a psychologist and a nutritionist and have been
helping people find their way thru that forest for about 20 yrs. I
have to clear a different path thru the underbrush for each person as
the issues are complex. Do not assume that it is psychological issues
at work - tho it very well may be. Often the inability to control what
we eat has its roots in physiology - food allergies/sensitivities can
make us crave those very foods that give us problems and is a hard merry
go round to step off of - especially without guidance and support.
Also deficiencies can cause overpowering cravings. The body is telling
us (loudly) that it needs something, but all we hear is "I'm HUNGRY!".
Once the deficiency is resolved those pushy food cravings will quiet
down. It is very complex - the human organism. That is why I am a
holistic psychologist - it is NOT all in our head; but sometimes it is :-).

RE: [AlpacaTalk] RE: honey

I think the sugar in the honey makes the swelling in the tissues go down and it is then easier to put it back in place. I had an alpaca with a prolapsed uterus and the vet told me to have a 5 pound bag of sugar ready when he got there. He poured the sugar over the prolapse after cleaning it off. The sugar drew the fluid out of the tissues so he was able to fit it back in.

The prolapsed tissue is cleaned off and an antibacterial may be used if any lacerations……..then a "dollop" of honey is coated on and it is gently pushed back inside the bird, which a gloved little finger.  Sounds awful, but worse to leave it.  I know this isn't a chicken list, but wanted to give an odd example of the many uses for honey!

Hi Peter,

I'd like to see you on the board. We really need someone who has the smaller breeder in mind. I think you would be just what we need right now! Go for it!

On another subject, I thank all Alpaca Blanket Project members and all alpaca owners.  ABP was the #1 user of American alpaca fiber in 2010 and with all your support, we are able to increase our per-pound payment payment to you for your fiber in 2011.  What seems forgotten sometimes is that without you, there would be no fiber.  Our goal is to increase the value of American fiber and to bring that value back to the fiber producer.  It is wonderful to now have the Warranted to be a Pendleton label on our products.  This coming fall, we should be able to again double production and have six different runs available by the end of October.
Again, many thanks!!
