Re: [AlpacaTalk] 6.8 lb cria 4 days past due Help!

I'll also add that getting some Nursemate for kids or lambs is a very
good idea. I forget which pre-eminent alpaca vet recommends it, but I
agree! Give as soon after delivery as possible. I had a cria that
appeared great and fine, did well, then after a week he seemed to slow
down. I gave him the nursemate and it perked him right up and at 10
months of age he settled a couple of girls in his pasture! We just had
a cria born yesterday in the evening, I gave her a dose of Nursemate
and she's doing great!

There are other very good products for new lambs and kinds on the
market that go by the names of Nutri-Drench, and there was another one
that I can't think of right now.

Certainly your little one is dysmature and as Chuck said, has an uphill
battle. Hopefully a combination of everyone's great suggestions will
work! Best of luck to you and your little boy!

careful with the Karo. I just overdid it myself and gave my cria diarhea. Dr
Ruthanne suggested stopping the karo after the first poop. I am feeding my

Re: [AlpacaTalk] 6.8 lb cria 4 days past due Help!

hi Susan - i had the same thing happen with my little guy born friday night - usually i look for the first poop so i know they've gone but with two being born at once, i didn't get to it. Then i noticed Gabriel was really lethargic on saturday, and watched as mom took him to the poop pile - he was straining but nothing came - then it dawned on me that i hadn't been as watchful as usual - so enema time and he immediately had a good healthy poop and was was running around.
I haven't been so involved with poop since my kids were in diapers, but it really is important.

and Wendy my heart goes out to you and your tiny baby - the cow colostrum pulled one of mine through last summer, and since then i've heard of the yogurt and caro syrup - Hang in there - my prayers are with you.

Hi Wendy,

I have no experience with tiny cria at all. But you mentioned your baby seems to eat less and less, and thought I'd share what I have noticed today. My 3 days old baby girl was getting less active this afternoon, and as I was watching her, she was not nursing for 2-3 hours, then I noticed that even mom took her to the poop pile encouraging her, she only urinated, and could not produce any feces. After couple of her tries I decided to give her an enema. She produced a nice bunch of feces, and she started to nurse big time in about 2-3 minutes, and energy came with it. ;o)

Just make sure that what goes in comes out. If it doesn't, even the healthiest, strongest cria could go down in a very short time.

I hope your baby will get stronger soon. ;o)

am getting worried he does not seem to want to eat as much as before.
I am hoping it is only because he is tired. He is sleeping good now.

RE: [AlpacaTalk] Re: 6.8 lb cria 4 days past due Help!

I think you are doing the right things for your cria. I don't want to
discourage you, but 6.8lbs is very small. Keep him warm. He will sleep a
lot, so just let him. Cow's colostrum and a little yoghurt sounds pretty
good to me. I would also give him a few cc's of Karo Light Syrup for
energy. For the sake of you and your heart, I sure hope he makes it.

By the way, a cria coat might be a good idea. Have you taken his
temperature? You don't want him to over heat, but keeping him warm is
critical.

Please keep us informed over the next few days.

Hang in there. If it's meant to be for him to make it, with your help he will. Sounds like you are doing everything possible to give him the fighting chance to make it :) Keep us posted and will be praying for him to get stronger each day.
