Re: [AlpacaTalk] ear trouble

Could it possibly be ear ticks? We are using liquid Ivermectin with a little mineral oil in ears to kill the ticks. You can not see them they are too deep in the ear.I recommend you do some research on line about these ticks.I have to friends that have lost alpacas this year to these ticks. The female seems to be the poison one.I would check it out and see if the symptoms are what your alpaca is having.I found lots of info on line.Good luck.Always,T

One of my guys has been holding his rt ear at a 90 degree angle for a
few days now. I have looked into it and see nothing. I have felt it
all over and feel nothing. It doesn't seem to hurt him. I put boric
acid in it which is my ear treatment for dogs and cats and will kill
mites, but that didn't help. Short of calling the vet, whom we just
had out for an eye injury that I am still trying to pay off, I don't
know what else to do.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks! Janice

RE: [AlpacaTalk] ear trouble

Hi Janice

You need to put your location.  Different areas of the states have different causes for this problem.. I know there is a tiny tiny tick that crawls specifically into ears and causes this problem and then do real damage to the inner ear ...I think.  I think the ticks are only the size of a spec.  I am sure someone will jump in to correct my vague memory of this tick.  I can't remember the name of it either!  Sorry!  I think they get far inside so you can't see them.  I will look through some of my old emails and see if I saved one on this subject.  I HATE ear problems!  My cattle dog has a beagle head with the beagle ears and she has constant ear wet oozy ears that I constantly battle.  I have had her to the vet several times and on antibiotics and ear drops.  I finally started sprinkling baby powder in her ear hoping to keep it drier if it's from sweating.  Check the outside good to for a tick that might be bothering him too.

Good luck and keep us posted as to what you find out!  I am learning from all the discussions.
