Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: D.E.

I adore d.e., or diatomceous earth.  Just make SURE you get the food-grade kind and not the pool kind as that can kill your animals.  I sprinkle it on the poo piles and also mix it into the grain and pellets and feed it to everyone here, including my cat rescues (it worms them) and horses.  It has really made a difference in our fly population this year and we've tried everything, including the fly predators to no avail.  It also helps keep your grain/pellets from spoiling if you mix it in.

RE: [AlpacaTalk] Re: D.E.

If no one has answered you, it is diatomaceous earth.

Diatomaceous Earth is a naturally occurring siliceous sedimentary mineral compound from microscopic skeletal remains of unicellular algae-like plants called diatoms. These plants have been part of the earth's ecology since prehistoric times. It is believed that 30 million years ago the diatoms built up into deep, chalky deposits of diatomite. The diatoms are mined and ground up to render a powder that looks and feels like talcum powder to us. It is a mineral based pesticide. DE is approximately 3% magnesium, 33% silicon, 19% calcium, 5% sodium, 2% iron and many other trace minerals such as titanium, boron, manganese, copper and zirconium. Diatomaceous Earth is a natural (not calcined or flux calcined) compound. Diatomaceous Earth is a natural grade diatomite. However, the continual breathing of any dust should he absolutely avoided.

When you use diatomaceous earth for your alpacas or other animals, always use food grade.  It will say food grade on the bag.  Usually, you can get it locally at feed mills or garden centers.   There are a lot of articles on DE on the internet for uses in controlling flies and pests.

I hope that helps. Peggy.

[AlpacaTalk] losing my friend

I just wanted to thank everyone who responded here or privately about the loss of my companion.
It is so wonderful to have people who are so kind and generous with their time and love!  I have experienced it time and again with my alpaca family, but this is the first time for me with the canine side of it.  I know that so many alpaca owners have dogs, guess that's the key- we all are animal lovers.

I really can't reply to everyone individually just yet, I am still quite the basket case, but I wanted to just express my gratitude for all your kindness.
If you want, you may visit my blog to see my tribute to my friend.  I am a writer and I find that writing is very cathartic for me.

Thank you again,
Rachelle

[AlpacaTalk] fiber pricing

Hi All:
My wife and I are having trouble pricng our alpaca fleece.

This is our plan: The fleece is washed and carded then packaged in ziplock bags, fifty grams to a bag. We will sell these bags at the open house we have each year at shearing time as well as having a year round in our house. the house is yet to be renovated.

The pricing of our product is causing us some concern. We are thinking that $5 or $6 per bag would be about right. If we use the $6 price point we would offer them at 2 bags for $10 also.

Are these prices high, low, or right on with other retailers?

We are new at this so would like as many of your ideas as possible.

Thank you all in advance.

By for now:
