RE: [AlpacaTalk] Re: D.E.

If no one has answered you, it is diatomaceous earth.

Diatomaceous Earth is a naturally occurring siliceous sedimentary mineral compound from microscopic skeletal remains of unicellular algae-like plants called diatoms. These plants have been part of the earth's ecology since prehistoric times. It is believed that 30 million years ago the diatoms built up into deep, chalky deposits of diatomite. The diatoms are mined and ground up to render a powder that looks and feels like talcum powder to us. It is a mineral based pesticide. DE is approximately 3% magnesium, 33% silicon, 19% calcium, 5% sodium, 2% iron and many other trace minerals such as titanium, boron, manganese, copper and zirconium. Diatomaceous Earth is a natural (not calcined or flux calcined) compound. Diatomaceous Earth is a natural grade diatomite. However, the continual breathing of any dust should he absolutely avoided.

When you use diatomaceous earth for your alpacas or other animals, always use food grade.  It will say food grade on the bag.  Usually, you can get it locally at feed mills or garden centers.   There are a lot of articles on DE on the internet for uses in controlling flies and pests.

I hope that helps. Peggy.

I have to ask. What is DE? I am new to alpaca and not sure what this is, but I have a fly problem.

The cria's especially seem drawn to it right away.  Maybe they know they need the minerals in it.  At times I can't keep the containers full of DE  and other times it just sits there for weeks.  They seem to instintively know what their systems need.   I use it liberally on poo piles and on the ground after we clean and in their dust rolling beds for lice control.
