Re: [Alpacasite] Digest Number 5175

While I won't get into the question of alpaca blood in registered llamas, or
how suri llamas came about, I can answer some questions about the cross.
It can be registered as a cross with ILR. The Magnafire fiasco of two years
ago, the multiple lawsuits and ALSA suspensions for showing that have
followed would make me wary of falsly representing/registering this animal
as a llama. I think someone questioned the parties involved(Stachowski, Reed
and Tellez)is how this particular fraud was uncovered. Go to Llama Life II
for more details in the spring 2003 issue. If the offspring is a male, geld
it and use it as a fiber animal if the fleece is nice enough.
Blood testing is commonly done on breeding animals though it is not
required at this time. After the Magnafire fiasco, a breeder would have to
be an idiot to try the same stunt. The afore mentioned names may not have
meaning to alpaca folks, but the llama community is very familiar with them
(they are currently in the Collectible Llama Association). While most llama
owners will admit that the crosses have occurred in the past, I think the
majority of the alpaca blood in llamas have come from imports that have
somehow passed the screening process. I won't even get into that!
I do know that suri type fiber has been, in the past, an occasional
cropout in heavy/medium fiber animals. The look was fluffy at the time, so
they had to be groomed a lot more. I think the blood of alpacas and llamas
(as well as guanacos and vicunas) have been passed back and forth in South
America in the past. I know some short wooled classics that have been
traced back to guanacos. I don't breed so I have no dogs in any of these
fights. I have had both llamas and alpacas.
The alpaca people have been smart enough to close the registry. If the
llama community did the same, many of the problems would be solved. I am
also a fan of DNA testing of all breeding animals. Just my .02, FWIW.
Susan Ravan

That having been said I do not know the intricate details of the ILR and
how it relates to the suri llama business but if recent activities are
any indication then registering your huarizo as a llama would not be the
first time this has happened and is likely to be rather easy. As I
understand it the ILR does not require blood testing and there is no
requirement to verify what someone put on the registration.

With good bedding, dry barn, and out of the wind, I would go ahead and
barn them, especially if you have been doing that in warmer evenings.
I wouldn't necessarily coat the baby at this temp if out of the wind,
dew, and with warm bedding.
Dr. Anderson reposted a hyper / hypo thermia thing recently and one
the 'cues' he discussed about hyperthermia in cria and adults was
their posture when kushed. He indicated that an animal working hard to
preserve body heat, will stretch its neck out fully on the ground, and
rather than kushing with body slightly raised off the ground will look
like they are 'pressing' their entire body against the ground to
assist in minimizing heat loss. Shivering of course is a whole
different panic time, and a healthy cria not exposed to any dampness
or wind in good straw bedding should be fine in just barely below
freezing. Wind and rain are the enemies more so than just plain cool
temps.

What is everyone's opinion on what is a reasonable temperature for a
week-old cria to be exposed to? Tonight it's supposed to reach 31 F,
very dry, some breeze but nothing major to affect the wind chill. We
have been putting mom and baby up in the barn at night the first few

[Alpacasite] Re: Fw: protection/gate weakness

Hi Sandy. I have the standard 5' no-climb, but also have two electic
wires running around the outside of the fence - one low and one at
the top. Each is separately powered by a solar charger. I also laid
a 32" fence on the ground all the way around the outside and
attached it to the botom of the vertical fence. I tucked the outside
down into a trench I had dug with a trencher.

Re: [Alpacasite] DNA test "blood draw" question

I've had better luck pulling blood from the tail than the ear, directions at
<http://www.alpacaregistry.net/forms/FTA_Card_Instructions.pdf>
Note: When pulling from the tail vein, plan on putting pressure on for 60
afterwards, as it will continue to drip

[Alpacasite] DNA test "blood draw" question

Hello,

I just got my registration request back from ARI and it said, in a nut
shell, that there was not enough blood. This alpaca is not a bleeder.
The poor guy got his ear poked to much already. I even had an alpaca
breeder friend try and that was the result "not enough blood" Please
give me some suggestions sort of calling the vet (he is outrageous for
barn calls). I don't want to put this guy through all that poking and
proding again. My wallet is suffering too :-)

Thanks,

Re: [Alpacasite] Fw: protection?

It's good that you're thinking ahead of protection before a tragedy
strikes.....

We also live very close to a state park and often see and hear coyotes in
our area. And dogs can be a threat no matter where you live. To address
these potential threats, we put up 5' no climb fencing with a strand of
electric running around the bottom. We also got an LGD, an Italian
Maremma Sheepdog. Unfortunately, despite these precautions a coyote was
able to kill our first cria as the Maremma was only a couple of months old
and our gates failed us. I've since been told that gates are the weak
link in any fencing endeavor, and it was certainly true in our case.
Anyway, we fixed the gating problem and the Maremma's now grown. In fact,
we soon added a second Maremma and are now breeding them. Last week we
added a third Maremma to our menagerie. (Although my husband disagrees, I
figure you can never have too many dogs around!) Anyway, no problems with
coyotes since that first one. We still hear them and see them a mile or
more away, but none on or near our property.

I know that others use guard llamas, but for various reasons we didn't go
that route. Primarily, because llamas would reduce the number of alpacas
I can keep on my limited acreage. Also, I'd need a llama or two per
pasture, where dogs can easily be given access to all pastures. Besides,
I like dogs. :) Obviously, then, we're partial to Maremmas. You can
find more information about them at www.all-animals.com/maremmas.
However, there are other breeds, such as the Great Pyrs that also make
excellent LGDs. Both Maremmas and Pyrs are natural protectors while still
being friendly to people.

If I can provide more information, please don't hesitate to ask.

[Alpacasite] Re: getting into any industry/work efficiency

Lori,

As the years go by and you learn "the tricks of the trade" you will
really be amazed at how easy it is to take good care of even a large
group of alpacas. Much easier than caring for horses!

We currently have about 90. Routine poop scooping, feeding and
watering takes 1 person about 2 hours, including using stall dry and
adding to bedding.

There are many ways to increase your efficiency (read that as "taking
less time to get through routine chores"). As you visit different
farms pay attention to how folks make life easy on themselves.

Re: [Alpacasite] getting into any industry

Ok I was starting to get worried that I was not doing something right with
my Animals. I thought 50 hrs a week!! What in heavens name can you be
doing. I thought you meant the day to day stuff. I have had horses for
most of my life and been breeding showing and selling for more then 20 years
of this.
We have 6 Alpaca's now and I feel guilty that it seems to take no time at
all to look after them. I spend more time watching them then doing any
real work :-) My horses take way more time so this seems to easy :-) They
don't like to eat all the hay I give them. they prefer the leaves and the
horses don't mind the rest. Every couple of days I rake up the uneaten hay
and give it to the horses. They have only just started to use the inside of
the barn to go to the bathroom, so only had to do pasture clean up ever few
days. they have 2 big grass paddocks to roam in. the boys have an acre of
grass.

Now I need to work on a webpage for them I just have them added to my dogs
webpage but have started their own. So yes now comes the marketing part:-)
I am in no rush but I know it takes awhile to get known in a business. My
worry is I love the ones I have now how will I ever sell them!!!!!!

Re: [Alpacasite] needing a sounding board of impartial people

Thank you Cathy

I was hoping this would be the way it was. I have been breeding showing and
selling horses for over 20 years and that is the way it is with the horses
also.

I am excited because one is a black girl bred to a black male I have loved
since I started looking at Alpaca's. So I am crossing my fingers on this one
:-)

Re: [Alpacasite] Having trouble finding resources

Hey no problem you made my day. Was there an announcement that I missed
somewhere. I know everyone was talking about it coming out but that it was
still going to be awhile and since I never read anything I assumed it was
not out yet.
