RE: [AlpacaTalk] Dog Attack, any advice on Suri alpacas as replacements?

Hi Wendy,

We have both suris and huacayas and your question brings up some interesting
factors. We like them both..but you just have to understand a few things
about each type to get the best values.

It is relatively "OK" to have a huacaya from two suris. I have a Color
Champion Gray huacaya girl, Pandora, who is in our foundation herd who is
such an alpaca. Her fleece is still absolutely consistently "zipper"
crimped with a long staple and tiny bundles.just want you want; great luster
and very fine. So the girl overall, her conformation and fleece, are top
notch. If I were willing to part with her, I would disclose her
parentage.and I'd have no problem selling her for a lot of money, because
she is worth every bit of it. However, I would not sell her for any
reasonable sum.

We had her Mom, Tally Pearl, who was a suri. We bred her only to dark,
solid suris with very good locking..and a track record of only suri
births...even in the collateral relatives. We bought her already bred with
the huacaya girl at foot when we were just starting out. I bought her
mainly for the cria at side.and that was not a bad move in this case. I
lucked out! But Tally's suri offspring are harder to sell because their
"sis" is a huacaya.even though Mom was an import and so it does not show on
her pedigree as anything but suri..I would not sell her without disclosing
her huacaya daughter from a well known gray suri stud!!! Tally has passed
on due to the "snots" a year or so back, so now the issue is moot.

We breed her huacaya daughter, Pandora, as a huacaya and she has given us 2
beautiful, award winning huacaya girl crias and is due with a third any
moment.

Her suri siblings are bred as suris to the best studs we can afford and so
far, they have not ever thrown anything but suris for us. However, it is
very well to remember when buying a suri that all the hype in the world does
not truly deny the fact that these so called "pure" suris.are only as pure
as the AMERICAN pedigree..their Sire or Dam before importation might just
have been a huacaya!

We just don't have that many generations of "pure suri" on the ground to
ensure you won't get the occasional huacaya from your suri breedings.
AND..those huacayas should not be disparaged, they can be great quality.
But it does reflect negatively on their suri parents..so just be aware and
understand what is the truth here.

Have very good luck with your shopping! If you are not sure what you want
suri wise, I could make some off list suggestions of people who could help
you get the best suris you can afford for your new herd, if you like. There
are folks out there who truly know their suris and who has whom for sale!

replacements?

Hi everybody, I really appreciate all of the advice, and condolences. You
all have really helped me through the process of healing. I am still not
sure if my insurance is going to pay, but they have all the information they
need now and I am only waiting to hear from them. I have been looking at
alpacas to purchase and I am considering Suri's this time because someone
has a package of 3 suri girls and 1 Huacaya girl for $7000.00. The only
thing is I don't understand alot about Suri's becuase I studied huacaya's.
The Huacaya they are offering is out of 2 suri's and one of the suri's is an
F3 Suri. Will I be able to sell a huacaya out of 2 suri's? Can anyone give
me some advice? Thank you all in advance and God Bless.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Dog Attack, any advice on Suri alpacas as replacements?

Typically, selling a huacaya out of 2 suris is much easier than selling a suri with huacaya in the pedigree.  If suri is the dominant gene, then a huacaya out of suris is 100% huacaya and most people seem to accept that.  However, a suri with a huacaya in the background is known to be heterozygous and therefore harder to market.  (Which makes little sense since many suris have huacaya ancestry, but are "hidden" for the heterozygous gene).  If I were breeding huacayas, I wouldn't hesitate to take on a huacaya out of suris if it demonstrated the fleece qualities I was looking for.  As a suri breeder, I have to confess to having a really nice suri gal whose dam was huacaya (not intentional, I assure you).  I will breed her to the best suris I can acquire or afford, but she will always be in my foundation herd because of the difficulty in marketing a suri with huacaya genetics.

Hello there,
good to read that healing is happening.
I'll leave the question of marketability of a huacaya out of two suris to those dedicated to huacayas and speak to the issue of the suri with the huacaya on the pedigree. It has become increasingly difficult to market such suris and thus this sector of the market seems to have softened the fastest and the farthest. The stigma (right wrong or indifferent) associated with having a huacaya on a suri pedigree has only grown in recent years.

Just something to keep in mind when looking for suris. If the quality out weights the pedigree it might be a great deal. As long as you go into it with your eyes open.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Dog Attack, any advice on Suri alpacas as replacements?

Hi Wendy,
I don't know what to tell you about marketability of backcross suris.
I think there is stigma attached to it, because there is always a
risk of a huacaya offspring.

There is also stigma attached to huacaya from suri. A lot of people
won't buy them, just like a lot of people won't buy a backcrossed
suri, or a suri that is known to have produced huacaya offspring. I
have a female whose dam is huacaya from suri, and we have others in
our herd who have suri in the background.

I prefer huacayas myself. I think the fleece is easier to work with
and they require less fuss with their fleece. But that's a personal
preference. The suri people really love the suris!

Best of luck!

[AlpacaTalk] Friday Marketplace! True Black Full Bolivian Junior Herdsire

Hi everybody!

My wonderful "Little Prince" is still here. I had a lot of interest
after my last post, but the stars just weren't aligned just right!
http://www.whitelotusalpacas.com/hotblack.html

Here is your chance to have a very rare true black full Bolivian
sire. White Lotus Hotblack de Bolivia is superfine, has high
frequency crimp, typey head, excellent conformation, generous leg
coverage, and the sweetest personality! He comes to see us at the
fence and follows us into the stalls. Bolivians are known for their
fineness, lack of guard hair, crimp, and density.

He comes from superfine parentage. His dam was 21.2µ at import when
she was over 3 years old. His sire wasn't tested when he was young,
but his sire and sibs have microns of 20-22 at age 2! Little Prince's
maternal half sister and brother had first year microns of 16.2 and
16.6. Both are ribbon winners.

Scirocco is a multiple blue ribbon winner. Another half sister won
1st place at halter at GWAS. Prince looks like he'll follow in his
sibs' footsteps!

I had him priced at $7500, then on sale for $5000. A little while
ago, I even discounted the price to half of that. I tell ya, this
gorgeous boy has what everyone needs. He can be yours! Make me an
offer. Once he starts winning ribbons, I may change my mind!
