Re: [AlpacaTalk] 326 day preemie born this morning

I'm so glad to hear she's doing well. Temp normal, standing, nursing...
all very good signs. If you can lay your hands on some goat, sheep, or
even bovine colostrum, and can get several ounces in her before she's
24 hours old, do so! And your milk formula looks almost exactly like
the one we use. In fact, we used to be able to find Extra-Rich cow milk
that we'd feed to our bottle babies. The cream helps put the pounds on.
Some breeders use skim milk and low fat yogurt in their formulae, but
we all know babies need all the fats and sugars they can get to put on
weight!

Definitely Nursemate is in order, or some comparable product. We always
have it on hand, and it's available from http://www.valleyvet.com with
free shipping on many, many items.

Also, keep an eye on your little one, I don't what your weather is
like, but you also don't want her getting too warm.

So far so good! Just keep a close eye, feed frequently if necessary...
you want her to gain at the very minimum 1/4 lb per day. The general
rule of thumb is 1/2 lb per day. Or, we want them to double their birth
weight by one month of age. I just did the math and that comes to 4-5
ounes per day which is right on target. Any less than that I'd get
worried and talk to the vet. Plasma transfusions and/or antibiotics
might be in order if she doesn't keep up.

Best wishes to you and your little sweetie! I had a full term girl have
to go to OSU for a week the day after she was born.... 2 plasma
transfusions, 2 weeks of Naxcell, and $3000 later, she's healthy and
feisty and in her first show this weekend. But I'm keeping my fingers
crossed, today the response to her fleece has been "wow" and "nice
staple." :) I just hope the judge feels the same way!

I'm thinking of your baby!

Re: [AlpacaTalk] 326 day preemie born this morning

Hi Heather,

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, we don't have a vet who makes
ranch calls. We have one that will come out for routine things and vet certs
but not emergencies. I called our regular vet who is 1 1/2 hours away by
trailer and he said if she's not much better by morning to bring her in and he'll
give her a plasma transfer. Yes, we did warm her up to 100 and I then put
two coats on her, a light sweater and a fleece on top of that for tonight. We
were going to bring mom and baby in the house, but mom is already too upset
because she can't get out of the catch pen and be with her girlfriends,
although they hang around the pen right outside of it.

The cria is doing better, she is stronger and standing up and finally
nursing on her own tonight. I did have to bottle feed her three times today
and milked mom and got some colostrum mixed into the bottle. I used 75% vit D
cow's milk, 25% 1/2 & 1/2 and a tsp of live vanilla yoghurt. She took 2 oz.
three times and wouldn't drink more. I'll check her all night long.

Boy, the first and only other cria we had last year was really late and
stood up and nursed within five minutes. What a huge difference this one is.
Thanks, everyone for your great advice and help!

Re: [AlpacaTalk] 326 day preemie born this morning

We were at a show all day, so wasn't here to answer. To me, 9.2 lbs
sounds more than 3 weeks early. I'd check the breeding dates. And
really, for a temp of 94º, she should have been warmed up with blow
dryers until her rectal temp was more like 100º. She definitely needs
more colostrum. And if she won't take a bottle you may need to learn
hoe to tube feed. If she were mine, I'd call the vet.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] 326 day preemie born this morning

We had a 326 day (3 week) preemie born this morning, of course a female out
of our best dam. Mom has milk, I milked her and got 1 oz into cria, but
after 3 hours she hasn't tried to stand. If I hold her up, she stands 1-2
seconds. She is cushed with head up and alert, ears up, teeth not erupted. I'm
going to the store now to get Karo syrup and cow's milk and 1/2 and 1/2 right
now, we were not ready for this one yet! 9.2 lbs, low temp of 94 so I covered
her with blankets. Any other suggestions?

[AlpacaTalk] Clean Slate Proposal? Get real!

Oh big surprise! Last night I sent a rather long reply to the "Clean
Slate Proposal" thread on AS via the web interface, and did not copy it
to a file on my computer... And surprise surprise, Rick did not see fit
to post it on AS. How's that for a clean slate?

His actions are irresponsible, capricious, and unforgivable. He does
not allow posts critical of him on the site, yet he feels free to speak
about anyone in any he wishes. He does practice censorship and acts as
"thought police." That is not acceptable on a discussion group which he
did not create, and which now needs to be finally handed over,
completely, to a more stable person.

Rick's actions on AS have proved he cannot be trusted. His chosen
co-moderators still do not have access to the moderation controls on
the group. It is time he hands over ownership of that group to someone
who has years of rational, calm, and wise contributions to the group,
and to someone who was consulted in advance... And someone who wants to
do it not for personal gain, but from willingness service to the alpaca
community.

Those who say "Oh I don't know how Rick does it on his own!" as though
moderating a chat group is a difficult task. For one, it's a chat
group! That's all! Also, the members are all adults. Someone may post
something that offends someone else, someone may get feelings hurt, but
we're all adults!

I was perma-moderated from AS because a couple of posts of mine were
critical of Rick, and I became short and terse with a guy trying to
find his way around keeping an alpaca with other alpacas... I finally
just said to him "What part of it don't you understand?" That was
enough to revoke my posting privileges on AS for the past 4 years.

Yet have you seen the posts Rick makes to people on AS? It's awful the
way he speaks to some people, publicly, on that chat group. And what I
find more objectionable is that he doesn't hold himself to the same
standard that he holds others.

It is time for Rick Horn to hand over ownership of AS to someone else.

He put me on perma-moderate on AS over a year ago. I
finally changed my preference to read-only, so I don't
have to listen to the daily BS anymore and the rules
and fines and...then he kicked me off AlpacaPolitics.
I am sick of reading about him and his mood swings.
How is it that he is free to act out but others are
put on moderate when they step out of line?

I hereby nominate this a Rick free zone. All in favor
say "aye".

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Fwd: Current status of group

Heather,

What I mean is basically the whole second and third paragraph below.? You can complain about Rick all you want, but its not going to?do any good.? It isn't going to change him.? Judging by the responses here, people agree with you, but it makes me want to ask that question we Washingtonian's ask when things get tense - "How bout them Mariners?"

So, does anyone?have any crias due soon?? My first one this year is due in August.??The mom-to-be?is?the first female cria born on my farm.? Makes me feel old - well, just about everything makes me feel old these days, but this makes me feel older :)? I'm pretty excited, although she is quite the spitter now, I can just imagine how she's going to be with a baby at side.

Well I'm not sure what you mean about beating my head against the
wall... I read AS far less than I do the AN "forum," both have
moderator problems, if you ask me, which nobody has... ;>

I just think it's time people stop putting up with stupid nonsense
dished out by that list owner, and move to a group where that sort of
childishness is not tolerated... from the owner/moderator.

For him to have named 4 moderators and not given them any ability to
actually moderate, I think that is the most insulting and ludicrous
thing I've ever seen. Rule #1 in management: Do not give responsibility
without also granting authority.
Rule #1 in my book: If you expect respect, you can't act like an ass
and treat people like crap whenever you feel like it.
I think he has broken both rules, and he breaks my #1 rule constantly.
I cannot figure out why people kow-tow to and fawn over him. At least
I'm glad to see that more people are seeing the light, and seeing his
true colors.

Anyway, spread the word that THIS group really does respect everyone
and their opinions, and we really do treat people like adults.

Best,
Heather

comments from readers:

Just bought your book--took it with me while visiting another alpaca farm, and couldn't get it back from her; so I need another one. From what I've read so far, it's definitely worth paying twice for. I've read everything out there on marketing. If you saw my library, it would make your head spin. There were a lot of things which I read for the first time.

I'm reading Ellie's new farm marketing book right now and it's TERRIFIC! I'm learning soooo much!

I love it and learned so much! All in all, this is an awesome book!

I was one of the people who proofread Marketing Farm Products and it is AWESOME! In fact, I'm ordering copies hot off the press for several of my friends. I can truly say I learned something new on almost every page and I'll be using Ellie's principles to sell my Storey book as well as several titles I plan to self-publish. If you sell anything--any sort of home-based product at all - honestly, you NEED this book. It's much, MUCH better than any other sales or marketing book I've ever read.
