Re: [AlpacaTalk] RE: Update on Eye Injury

I'm hoping a good vet moves in near you!

Yes, our vets are really wonderful. In fact, ours was out last year
delivering two dystocias in one night, at around midnight. Wait, maybe
it was one each, two nights in a row. One was a torsion, the other
was... Oh I can't remember. Cervix not dilated maybe? We had another
one of those 3 years ago, different dam. But both were maidens. Anyway,
he is always available, and happy to help.

Maybe you could check with the closest university with a vet school and
see if they have a program for sending grads to small communities, like
they do for human doctors! I think University of Tennessee has a vet
school.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] RE: No Posts?

Oh yes, this was the most awful thing I ever heard about. It was last
year, I think, just a few days before Halloween. The cria was dark
brown, I think... looked black probably to the sick horrible pieces of
garbage that did it. It was speculated that it was some sort of satanic
ritual kind of thing. But, as no suspects have been caught and
absolutely no leads developed, it's just conjecture. Jess and Cookie
Bowers are handling the donation fund. I am pretty sure the cria
belonged to Tana Ward... I think in Illinois but I'm not certain of
that.

<<Congratulations on Allie's eye!

I'm sorry but that vet sounds like a complete jerk! There are many vets
who do keep only office hours, but we are fortunate to have two large
animal vets literally within minutes of us who are available at all
hours, 24/7.

Heather>>

Thanks Heather, I am beyond relieved. I was really so very worried and
freaked out about it. Not to mention the worry about how in the world I
pay for a $1000 operation and transport. It was imperative that this
eye heal up!

Yep, she's a complete jerk alright. She had commented when I called her
at midnight when Allie's lower jaw/mouth was swollen up to the size of a
basketball and I thought suffocation was minutes away that she didn't
have time to keep up with dogs, cats, and horses and certainly did not
have time to learn a new species. I assume from that comment that she
treats dogs and cats - right? So I called her Friday morning to tell
her that the cats I took in that were in need of a home had tapeworms
and could I get the meds from her to treat; and also that my elderly dog
was looking real bad. I was starting to get scared. I have been
treating him myself for a chronic stinky skin condition that has caused
him, a beautiful imported long hair german shepard, to lose most of his
hair and chew large raw places on himself. I have noticed in the past
few weeks that he just looks very old all of a sudden, worn out, very
skinny, in addition to very thin hair, and a lump on his throat has
started to bleed occasionally. The past few days he has "that look" in
his eyes that tells me something is very wrong. Cancer? Diabetes? I
don't know, but something is wrong. I have had him on thyroid meds for
the past 2 yrs when he was looking this bad 2 summers ago and that
really helped.....for a while. I asked her if she could draw blood and
check his thyroid and also just a general screening and exam to see if
perhaps he has cancer. I told her that he looked really bad and had
"the look" in his eye. Anyone who has ever loved a dog knows that look,
and I was scared and worried enough to ask for help. That was Fri
morning. She didn't call back until mid day Sat. Gave me the # of the
vet clinic she works in "half a day a week - sometimes, depending on her
schedule and their schedule" and said she would be happy to see him there.

I am constantly amazed at people around here. I could never in a
million years be so cold. She didn't call on Fri when I could have
called the clinic and made an appt. Nope, waited until Sat afternoon.
But it doesn't really matter anyway. The car I am currently driving is
too small to even transport the dog to a clinic.....the baby seat in the
middle of the back seat effectively rules that out and I have no one to
leave the baby with, so the baby and the baby seat must go everywhere I
go.....which is why I called her to see if she could see him
here.....she is after all a mobile vet And again, lives right around
the corner from me. I'd say she has made it quite clear that she
doesn't need nor want my business. So I will say once again.....
*this* is why I have done without a vet for so long. It must be nice to
have so much business that you don't need or want any more. Personally
my business and income have been in the tank for about 2 yrs now and I
bend over backwards to accomodate my clients. But I bend over backwards
to help people, client or not, needing business or not, it doesn't
matter to me.....if I can help I will and do.

You're very lucky Heather, to have such great medical help close by and
willing!

Warmly, Janice in GA

June, Can you tell me more about how you do this? Whole garlic cloves,
mashed? Is the molasses to cover the taste of the garlic? Or part of
your deworming formula? I see that you also put out DE free choice with
minerals, kelp and salt. Are you using the DE for deworming or for fly
control? You say that you worm when needed.....are you doing fecals to
determine this? I have a friend that raises a few dairy goats and I
know she uses some sort of herbal worming mix as she wants no chemicals
in her dairy goats. Are you doing the same for the horses? I just
spent eons of time researching horse deworming and had to write up this
rather complicated schedule of what wormers when and what wormers work
on what parasites and when they should be given. It all seems rather
complicated to me. I dutiful went out early this year and bought all
the various dewormers and then wrote up my schedule...but here it is
late fall and I never got around to more than the very first worming in
the spring, when I also did the alpacas. It is time to do the alpacas
again and I just cannot get myself geared up to catch, halter and shove
that paste down them for FIVE days. Anything would be preferable to
having to do that.

Thanks! Janice

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Deworming

Hi Janice,

Sorry, jumped the gun and didn't read any further. The DE is left in the mineral all year long, for worming and for fly control, have to admit it works great;) before this it was added to our custom order by the ton and they have had access daily for over 10 years without any negative draw backs. The horses are included(everyone gets exactly the same grain mixture here customized) , to worm my horses this is what i use 1 Tablespoon of food grade DE 1/4 teaspoon of powdered natural sulpher 2 Tablespoons of garlic powder 1 Tablespoon of Mollasses(the real mcoy, not the synthetic stuff they add to pig feed for taste) (i used to use fresh and did the grinding thing, and the garlic powder works just as well;) bye bye grinding LOL i do this 5 times per year, early spring, early summer, July(bot flys), in the fall right before first frost and right in the birthing room after mom delivers. If they still are off 1 week later i dose em again, but i never have had to, this is in addition to the DE daily. I give the goats and sheep and pacas 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon mollasses with just enough water added to pull it thru a syringe usually 1 tablespoon per dose, you could do this with the horses too, i just toss it all on top of their food;) The molasses and garlic are considered one dose so add your water to how many teaspoons etc of garlic you have put in.( 1part garlic-1+ water its very easy) to fit in the syringe for up to about 100 lbs basically, our male alpacas may get a little more depending on weight. Dogs weighing 100lbs receive the same dose as the sheep and goats less for puppies etc more for my 160+ boys always think weight its all natural and I really don't think you can overdose as I used to measure every little bit for each one, now I just judge and toss it in. Enough for over 100 head at a time;) If I find I have a really tough case of worms that doesn't respond the first time(like barberpole worm) i'll throw in an 1/8 of a teaspoon of sulpher with the second dose for the animal 1 week later or sooner if necessary, works like a charm, they really vacate or die off quickly. I have not done fecals since the move as i don't use the vets at all here, but back home they were pretty clean twice per year.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Beet Pulp/Molasses

Hi Janice,

thanks for the vote of confidence;) it is very hard to take peoples comments and such but you do get used to it. My only downfall with not vaccinating and its been 10 years for the dogs and about 5-8 years for the livestock is Enterotoxaemia in my lambs and kids, due to constantly changing hay,(me at work, i'm hoping that i do not have to go back and missing it until its too late to treat)(we live on PEI in Canada and the volume of people or product is just not here, most of my feed, (our grain i have custom mixed locally)herbs etc are all ordered thru a supplier thats here and he orders from Ontario) but I think we have figured out the hay thing( an hours drive one way, shish) so I have had some losses in the last 3 + years. Not many but it breaks my heart just the same. People ask you why, and its simply that I would love this all to work naturally again as we did it for many years, and my livestock with the move(1800 miles) after 3 years is finally starting to come around again;) and adapt to their brand new enviroment.iron in the soil, well water, different feed of nothing to what they are used to etc, but the last several months are proving that this is turning around finally and we are proud to say vaccine free;) still. The choke thing is hard as it happened here after the move and of course our only option was a high quality dairy ration made by Purina. Yuck! In the 10 years in Pacas i had never seen the likes. My custom mixed ration comes to the rescue again ;)

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Beet Pulp/Molasses

Thanks for sharing what you do June. I am so glad I asked this
questions and so glad for all the responses. It is great to hear what
everyone is doing and to learn. Obviously there is no one "right" way
to feed our guys. I have learned so much here and am fine tuning what I
have been doing.

I too had 2 very scary choke incidents many years ago. Thank goodness I
did not lose either of them. That must have been just awful for you. I
am impressed that you can tube your guys. I have't had the guts to
tackle that. I love that you are vaccine free. I too run a natural
farm and homestead. We skipped vaccines this year....simply due to
being too busy and time getting away from me. But it has occurred to me
many times that I do not vaccinate my kids and I am often questioning
myself asto why I am vaccinating my livestock. The alpacas are cheap
enough, but doggone they charge a LOT for those horse
vaccines....upwards of $100 for some and can't even get the West Nile
without a vet precription.....oh don't get me started on that ;-(.

What do you do that helps you feel comfortable with not vaccinating? I
understand natural deworming, but don't know anything about vaccine
alternatives. For my kids I know I am comfortable with not vaccinating
because we homeschool and they don't go to day care or anywhere where
they are exposed to large groups of children. When we go to a class of
some sort I immediately use hand sanitizer on us all as we are leaving
the group! So maybe having a closed herd is all the protection you feel
is needed? But what about things that are carried in by wild life? I
would love to go vaccine free "on purpose" :-).

At the time of my choke incidents I was feeding a llama pellet which was
the only thing available around here. And even for that I was having to
drive to the next town over....about 40 min one way....to Southern
States to get that, which I still have to do. Every feed store I would
go to around here I would ask what do the llama owners around here feed?
Sweet Feed was always the answer :-(. At least I knew better than
that. But llama pellets were long. After my 2nd choke incident I
started running the feed thru the blender before feeding. Very labor
and time intensive. But I wasn't going to go thru *that* again. It was
horrifying. I remember in Dr Evans manual he states that he thinks the
risk of choke is overstated and that he has never seen a loss from that.
After witnessing it twice I was NOT going to take a chance.

Finally, after much asking, I got the Southern States coop to look into
getting alpaca feed. Dr Evans had told me that SS had purchased the
formula from him and they were making, but the one here didn't seem to
know anything about it. It took about a year, but finally we got on a
regular ordering schedule and I have used it ever since....about 3-4 yrs
now. The pellets are much much smaller and I have had no problems.
They order it in especially for me as I am the only one around here
requesting it. The only problem I have encountered is they will not eat
their minerals. When I was grinding their feed up I was mixing the
minerals in and they were eating it all up; but with the pellets they
let the minerals fall to the bottom of the tray and don't touch. Now
mixing them in with the beet pulp they are once again, after all this
time, getting their minerals. I am thrilled.

Thanks for sharing!
Warmly, Janice, jealous of your operation and all your various herds!
My dream :-)
