Re: [AlpacaTalk] Deworming
Hi Janice,
Sorry, jumped the gun and didn't read any further. The DE is left in the mineral all year long, for worming and for fly control, have to admit it works great;) before this it was added to our custom order by the ton and they have had access daily for over 10 years without any negative draw backs. The horses are included(everyone gets exactly the same grain mixture here customized) , to worm my horses this is what i use 1 Tablespoon of food grade DE 1/4 teaspoon of powdered natural sulpher 2 Tablespoons of garlic powder 1 Tablespoon of Mollasses(the real mcoy, not the synthetic stuff they add to pig feed for taste) (i used to use fresh and did the grinding thing, and the garlic powder works just as well;) bye bye grinding LOL i do this 5 times per year, early spring, early summer, July(bot flys), in the fall right before first frost and right in the birthing room after mom delivers. If they still are off 1 week later i dose em again, but i never have had to, this is in addition to the DE daily. I give the goats and sheep and pacas 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon mollasses with just enough water added to pull it thru a syringe usually 1 tablespoon per dose, you could do this with the horses too, i just toss it all on top of their food;) The molasses and garlic are considered one dose so add your water to how many teaspoons etc of garlic you have put in.( 1part garlic-1+ water its very easy) to fit in the syringe for up to about 100 lbs basically, our male alpacas may get a little more depending on weight. Dogs weighing 100lbs receive the same dose as the sheep and goats less for puppies etc more for my 160+ boys always think weight its all natural and I really don't think you can overdose as I used to measure every little bit for each one, now I just judge and toss it in. Enough for over 100 head at a time;) If I find I have a really tough case of worms that doesn't respond the first time(like barberpole worm) i'll throw in an 1/8 of a teaspoon of sulpher with the second dose for the animal 1 week later or sooner if necessary, works like a charm, they really vacate or die off quickly. I have not done fecals since the move as i don't use the vets at all here, but back home they were pretty clean twice per year.

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] Deworming
<<We deworm everybody when needed/ and on a schedule of 5 times per year
with garlic and molasses.>>
June, Can you tell me more about how you do this? Whole garlic cloves,
mashed? Is the molasses to cover the taste of the garlic? Or part of
your deworming formula? I see that you also put out DE free choice with
minerals, kelp and salt. Are you using the DE for deworming or for fly
control? You say that you worm when needed.....are you doing fecals to
determine this? I have a friend that raises a few dairy goats and I
know she uses some sort of herbal worming mix as she wants no chemicals
in her dairy goats. Are you doing the same for the horses? I just
spent eons of time researching horse deworming and had to write up this
rather complicated schedule of what wormers when and what wormers work
on what parasites and when they should be given. It all seems rather
complicated to me. I dutiful went out early this year and bought all
the various dewormers and then wrote up my schedule...but here it is
late fall and I never got around to more than the very first worming in
the spring, when I also did the alpacas. It is time to do the alpacas
again and I just cannot get myself geared up to catch, halter and shove
that paste down them for FIVE days. Anything would be preferable to
having to do that.
Thanks! Janice
