RE: [AlpacaTalk] DNA/breeding question

Hi Heather,

Yes, since we are not privy to the pedigrees for the animals imported to us,
you might easily have linebred on some common ancestor.and that is not
necessarily a bad thing. However if you breed this girl to her uncle or
some such..I'd take a less happy view of that close a line breeding.

I know it is a "feared" idea in alpacas, but it is accepted wisdom to
linebreed in almost every other industry.so long as you do it within
reason.not too close, and not too often. Sometimes you want to reinforce a
quality trait that an ancestor has offered up.so you linebreed on that
particular portion of the pedigree to reinforce or double up on that
desirable trait.

It is OK in my view to do exactly that.not by accident but on purpose.

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] DNA/breeding question

I have an interesting question for you all. I just received the
registration confirmation on my lovely Kallista today. I looked at her
DNA detail and 7 of the 14 markers were identical for both the A1 and
A2 markers. I'm no geneticist, but did I inadvertently line-breed? She
is 3/4 Bolivian, her dam and grandsire, the late great Silas of
Bolivia, came in on the same import. Probably part of the same herd,
and now I'm thinking, probably were related a bit? Or quite a bit?

Whether or not she's line-bred, I'm thrilled with her, her fleece is
gorgeous, super crimpy and very fine. Sorry for the boasting but it
takes my breath away every time I look at her fleece! And I do plan to
repeat the breeding, if not this year, then next!

Ok everyone, please let's be reasonable. keep links, pics, etc.,
limited to actual topics related to alpaca breeding, showing, farming,
selling, etc. No sports or religion links.

Do I really need to make rules for every specific thing NOT to do, like
when my daughter was 2 years old? Don't put peas in your nose. Don't
put buttons in your nose. Don't put pennies in your nose. Don't put
peanuts in your nose. Don't put dimes in your nose. Yes, dimes aren't
pennies, you're right..

Same thing happened after the dot com crash. Assets lost value and
people retrenched.

I suspect that a lot of alpaca purchases were being facilitated with
home refinancing. So now we are experiencing a shortage of capital
to invest in these critters along with any number of people being
forced to make quick sales. That creates the perfect environment to
drive prices down - just as is happening in real estate.

The question then becomes if lower prices will become the norm, or if
they will rebound with a recovering economy.

I am not particularly worried. While I wish folks would not try to
compete on price point alone, I have to admit that even getting $5k
for a good quality dam is still good money for farming.

Of course, lower prices will, at some point, have to effect stud
fees. Hard to demand more for a stud fee than even a female might
sell for.

Re: [AlpacaTalk]New subject....Current alpaca sales

That;s where the 70,000 estimates comes in, someone searched the
registry and came up with that figure for the number of live alpacas in
the US at this time. Of course there's no telling how many
non-registered alpacas there might be in fiber herds.

You mentioned 100,000 alpacas being registered, however, how many
have gone to the great pasture in the sky? We may very well be less
than that. I agree that it is just this crummy economy. Although I am
no expert, I see the alpaca industry as still in its beginning phase!

Here's my opinion: I think it's just a reflection of the economy as a
whole. Our industry is no different than others when it comes to the
effects of fuel prices, the extremely soft dollar, jobs outsourced to
China and India... you name it. Not to mention the sub-prime loan
debacle, billions and trillions of dollars going to Iraq. The economy
just sucks right now. Some financial analysts feel we're headed for a
recession, some say a hard recession (depression?).

Others feel the alpaca market is becoming saturated, but it's estimated
that there are between 70 and 100,000 alpacas (we had "our" 100,000th
alpaca registered a few months ago) in the US right now, and this is
fraction of other livestock species. I think there's plenty of room for
continuing growth in this industry, we just need to ride out the poor
financial times. I hope I can afford to do so, I am seeing very good
results in my very small breeding program, and I want to be able to
continue!

Here it is everyone. This is weird, it lets some of your posts through
but not others. I have no clue why. I do know sometimes Yahoo has
delays in posting messages, but it makes no sense that some would make
it and not others.
