[AlpacaTalk] RE: colors
i have found that no matter what can be "expected" via genetics (i.e. 25% chance of a BEW with gray bred to spotted; polled vs horned in cattle; F1 and F2 strains) the genes aren't sitting there keeping count! (hello, womb. this is ovary. swimmers have checked in once again as grey. we need to make this one with blue eyes since my records show we have shipped the 3 dark eyes already.) ;)
statistics show that in the long run you get the average (i.e. 50/50 or 48/52 male/female over a total of 100 breedings) but in a short term count, things don't always average out. you will see females advertised as having 100% females (really it is just 3 out of 3).
but in spite of all the science it does seem that some studs will let the females' color determine the cria's color and some studs' color seems to determine the color of the cria. when i have been looking for a stud i research the stud in ARI. sort the list on the females' color. see where your female's color falls and see if there is a trend. since the list sorts on the registered primary color and does not provide info on whether there is if any pattern or secondary color. but then it "feels" more accurate than just rolling a 22 sided dice.
