thanks Susan - this is exactly what i need - I appreciate you sending it along - i have one pregnant mom who concerns me - her last cria had a very hard time of it, and mom was not overly maternal - i am hoping it was because that was her first cria, and that this summer will be different, but i want to be prepared "just in case".
thanks again,
Wendy

Wendy:
I found the recipe sitting in my mailbox --- was trying to clean
things up a bit since the computer tends to get full from alpacasite
and all posts seem like keeping...........so found it just last evening........

This post is from Steve Hull last December 6 on alpacasite.
two cups whole milk (16 oz)
two ounces of "half and half"
a "dab" of whole culture yogurt (~5 ml)
two tablespoons of dried cows milk
If the cria is very young, then the addition of 10 ml of Karo light
syrup (use NO other brand) is very helpful to keep blood glucose above
150 mg/dL.
Note that this blood glucose value of 150 is about DOUBLE the normal
value for adults and other young mammals (kittens, puppies, etc). But
young crias can have a normal blood glucose of 200 or even more.
If you do see some steatorrhea (pasty stool), then putting in a bit more
dry milk (protein) will often "harden up" the stool. Sometimes Karo can
cause loose stools as well (osmotic laxative effect).
Conversely, if your cria has very hard and dry beans (straining at
stool), then a bit more fat (half and half) can ease the cria's
situation.
Slowly adjust proportions of fat, protein and Karo to keep beans in
shape.
I strongly suggest mixing up enough milk for the entire day. The above
is enough for just a few feedings, but the ratios can be used to make up
a larger batch.
Just make changes slowly. For example, if you have steatorrhea, then in
the next batch only change the dried milk in the batch formula (above)
to three tablespoons for a day. If it continues, then leave the dried
milk amount the same (3 tablespoons) and decrease the half and half to
1.5 oz for a few days.
Personally, if I am getting weight gain, have a running about and
"bouncy" cria, then I don't worry too much about a slightly soft stool.
By the way, this mix is also a SUPERB addition to your morning coffee or
tea.
Thank you Marcie!
