[AlpacaTalk] Re: Bilateral Patella Luxation (injured both rear knees)

Susan,

Yes, I have a toy poodle that had to have his rear patella on one side repaired. But, a toy poodle and an alpaca are very different, not only in size, but also in anatomy and strain on the patella. When an alpaca rises from the kushed position the rear legs get all the weight and strain as she stands up. All published cases show that every case that survived has re-torn the patella(s). Currently, the vets have the rear legs fully extended and wrapped. The question is for how long to leave them like that to give her the best chance for not re-tearing them and how to best exercise her to keep her muscle tone.
