Re: [AlpacaTalk] drum carder

Excellent advice, Susan. Like maybe, if you're just planning to spin
one color, a picker would be the piece of equipment you'd want. I
really think I want one, a bench picker, not a hmmm, the dangerous
kind that you swing back and forth. And I do intend to build one
myself eventually. And a tumbler. For felting, a picker and tumbler
are probably more valuable than a carder, any day.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] drum carder

I have an Ashford drum carder that is still new in the box, never used. I
don't want to sell it but hate carding and don't feel it is really necessary.
A fellow spinner recently taught me to "card" the fleece by hand by holding
it in one fist and then pulling it apart with my hands about ten times. It
works just fine and spins great and a lot of the VM falls out, the rest does
while spinning. I have to admit that carded roving batts are easier to spin
but I don't want to waste the time doing it if the end product yarn looks the
same.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] drum carder

I am also a novice, and I don't even have experience with hand
carders. I got a great deal on an Ashford Traditional wheel and a
Duncan drum carder plus tons of accessories including extra bobbins,
hand carders, drop spindles, Louet double row mini combs, jumbo flyer
and bobbins, niddy-noddy, and of course the lazy kate that is
included with the wheel plus bags and bags of fleece to learn with...
for and incredible price. Check Craigslist frequently, everyone!

With my limited experience, I would say get one as big as you can
afford, and get a motorized one. Mine is an 8" drum, which makes an
8x22" batt. Hand crank. So time consuming and slow!

[AlpacaTalk] drum carder

Looking for information on which drum carder would be best for a novice. There are so many that I am lost as to which might be best for me. I've been carding with hand carders but would like to move to a drum carder. Any information would be greatly appreciated ie: which ones are better, what features to be sure it has etc. Thanks, Marsha
