Re: [AlpacaTalk] fertilizing pastures

Hi Peter,
First, let me say I'm very sorry, your post was lost in the Yahoo spam
filter waiting for me to approve or deny. Since I have been preparing
for the EVAA show last week, and at the show all weekend, and farm
visitors yesterday... I haven't been to the Yahoo page for days!

To answer your question, we don't irrigate or fertilize at all. We have
approximately 18 adult females total in two pastures of about 2+ acres
each. Males are unfortunately in smaller pastures.

That's it. :)

We offer free choice hay, free choice minerals, and our corn-free
Woodland Meadows alpaca supplement daily.

Our pastures are ok, we haven't overseeded enough like we wanted to,
but we do have decent pasture. Our animals split their time between
grazing and the hay boxes pretty evenly. Since we got the new feed
made, we have healthier alpacas, and everyone who is also using them
are seeing major health improvements, too. One woman called Mom (Sheri
Hewitt) yesterday and one thing she said was that her vet was out doing
herd health, and asked this woman what she was doing, that her animals'
fleeces were growing back faster than other breeders she'd visited.
Another breeder told the EVAA group that she's seeing brighter fleeces
with more saturated colors, which she feels speaks to an abundance of
health. Mom brought some boys down from Washington to broker for a
friend. All 3 of these boys showed amazing improvement in their fleece
since coming here. I need to get pics posted to show the change.

Sorry about the plug for the feed, but it's really amazing what has
happened!
