Re: [AlpacaTalk] RE: electric fence

Hi Janice,

No news from my vet, Amy so I guess there is no news from Dr. Anderson either. I did send her a note today, havent heard back.

Brandie is doing very well, does not seem to be showing any pain at all. The paddling when she would walk, is gone too, walking in a straight line.

I dont know if there is any connection or not, but since we atarted getting more day light, she started getting better a couple weeks ago.

Thanks for asking!!

Thanks to the people on alpacanation and CLAA, and to the people at ARI, they helped me to locate them all. I am very happy right now, I only have one male left to locate, that is a boy that my Cocoa fathered, and his name is Black Splash and he was sold to somebody down is Florida. That is the last piece of the puzzle to find for me, so this is just leaving you all a message saying how relieved I am!~

[AlpacaTalk] fencing questions

In case I came across a bit heavy handed in the discussion about
electric fencing. I would like to apologise.

It's not for me, and I don't think I'd ever install it. But for those
who do use it and it works for them, I'm sure they know, electric
fence needs daily inspection and regular maintenance. Those farms who
have had terrible accidents surely maintained their fences well.
Freak windstorms can easily blow down trees, so it's not too
surprising that it could blow down electrified tape. Freak accidents
can happen. I have enough on the farm to worry about already, I don't
need more! :)

And the question of "challenging" fences has long annoyed me.
Seriously, we have to replace at least two gate latches a year due to
the rubbing and leaning. In the boys' areas, fighting is another
cause... they fight and crash into fences and gates. Break a lot of
latches that way. We have redundant closures with J-latches, but we
like the ones that break because they keep the gate in line with the
fencing. I wish we could afford those fancy Sure-Latch closures for
all of our gates, but we have no less than 22 gates. Maybe we could
start with the most critical exterior gates?

Also, we have found that at minimum, 5 foot no-climb is necessary. 6
foot is better. We literally had a boy jump over a 4 foot fence to
get into the neighboring pasture to fight with another male. If you
have your boys separated from your girls with 4 foot fence, a
determined male will easily jump that to get to the girls. That can
be dangerous for underage maidens, crias, and you can have otherwise
"accidental" breedings that you may not have intended or wanted.

That is awesome news! But often that's how it happens, all of a
sudden out of the blue they decide it's time to eat pellets now!

Congrats!

[AlpacaTalk] HAPPY UPDATE ON My Boy Won't Eat Grain :-)

Hello all :-)  This is a happy follow-up to a post from a few weeks ago about my 5 month old who wouldn't eat grain, as some of you kind folks had asked that I keep you updated....

Guess who has been in the creep feeder CHOWING on grain for the past 4 days?

A few days ago the farm manager went out to the barn and heard my boy carrying on (she knew it was him because he has the most unusual "voice" - he doesn't hum, but rather makes bleating sounds more like a lamb...weird!).  He was in the creep feeder!  She stopped and held her breath, watching to see if he really wanted to be there, or just got "lost".  He then turned around and started eating what was left of the grain.  Apparently was miffed because the trays were getting low, because he then looked at her and started hollerin' again :-)  She refilled the bowl, he stopped crying, then dove into the grain and CHOWED!  Ever since that incident, he has been a happy visitor in the creep feeder and all he wants to do is eat grain.  And - if the trays start getting low, he starts his loud bleating again - go figure!

We really don't know what happened.... we took him to the vet, but she refused to give him a Vitamin D shot.  She did give him some other vitamins and took blood (results still not back).  The farm manager also tried to test mom for milk, and since she seemed kind of dry she had been bottle feeding him for a few days.  Then all of a sudden - BLAM-O, stuffing his face in the creep feeder!  Who knows...!

These alpacas never cease to amaze me...and they keep teaching me new things with each problem and worry they cause.  Gotta luv 'em!

Best wishes to all, with show, shearing and another birthing season coming upon us :-)

Best,

Re: [AlpacaTalk] hi from a new member

Hi Pam! Welcome!

Not all alpacas will take treats. But those of ours that do, love
carrots, apples, pears, (we have apple and pear trees in the
pastures). I also give them watermelon rind when we have watermelons.

I had a PR boy who used to love 'Nilla wafers and Pepsi. Really,
anything we took into the pastures, he'd want a sample. It got to
where he'd sniff our pockets to see what we had for him!

I don't recommend feeding sodas and sweets to alpacas, obviously, but
just about any fruit or vegetable is a good treat. :)

[AlpacaTalk] hi from a new member

Hello,
My name is Pam, I'm from AZ, and just yesterday we added 4 Alpacas to our
family. We also have 3 sheep and a few goats.
This was very unexpected, so even though we are thrilled to have them, we
are rather unprepared! But we already love these beautiful animals.
I've been reading about them online from many different sites and learning
all I can.
My question for now is, what do you all give your alpacas for treats? I've
read carrots for one.
Our sheep and goats love animal crackers for treats. They get a few every
day. Are these okay once in a while for alpacas, or are they a no no?
I'm looking forward to learning all I can about my alpacas, and also using
their wool for the needle felted animals I make. I already make them with
sheep wool, but alpaca fleece will be a fun, new adventure.
Thank you for allowing me to be part of your group.
Pam in AZ

[AlpacaTalk] Re: electric fence

Hi Janice,
Woo-hoo!!!!! I am SO glad to hear about your choice to separate! I am very impressed, and am so very happy you applied the counsel you were given. That makes you a cut above! I can't tell you how many newer breeders I know of who have continued to go on doing what they've been doing regardless of what seasoned breeder advice and caution they have received. Your decision makes YOU a conscientious breeder, and a caring steward.

All of us know of people who come to these sites with all their troubles and woes and get seasoned, well tempered advice- then just go on their way to do whatever they want. Eventually they become like the boy who cried wolf, and most of us just don't even want to offer our wisdom after a time. It is sad, but those people eventually fade away and their animals are the ones who continue to suffer with their poor decisions. They aren't taken seriously anymore, and we all cringe when we see their posts because we know- no matter what we say, they will just do what they want regardless of the cost to their precious pacas.

Thank you for your decision. I know I am not the only one here breathing a sigh of relief, and you have just confirmed your commitment to your alpacas. Like I said, WOO-HOO!!!!!!

I am sorry if I sounded like I was badgering you, but I did feel that you really needed to hear it all laid out with no punches pulled- guess I was right, huh? :)) You will see a difference in your breeding productivity and your female's health. It might take some time, and I would have a repro exam done to see if there is any extensive, long term damage when she is open, but believe me, your female is sooooo happy with you right now!

Happy to hear your little cria is well, and best wishes to you and your pacas! Post a picture on the website so we can all see her!

Rachelle>>>>

Thanks Rachelle. I am leaning towards the woven wire with a strand at
the top and a strand at the bottom (for the goats and digging
predators). I see the 5 strand suggested in goat books and it looks
more affordable, but I just don't see it dependably keeping critters in
AND out. If the goats weren't going to be sharing the new alpaca
pasture part of the time (night) I wouldn't even be putting electric
wire over there at all. I have *never* had a paca challenge a fence and
their fence is very cheap, old, and loose. Your boy sounds like
something else!

On a different note, I have wanted to thank you for being SO adament
about my separating my male. Some folks may have been offended by your
forthrightness, but I was not. It takes that sometimes to get me to
listen; as I know there is a best or preferred way to do things and then
just the way that *can* be done. As I am not a breeder, I take a lot of
what you guys say along those type of lines with a grain of salt.....I
am just a little ole homesteader trying to scrape by best I can on my
own and loving my alpacas. Had you not been so forceful, I would not
have done anything. But due to your continued harrassment <g> and
Heather's, I DID separate my male. It is a hassle every day as I don't
really have the set up to do that and we (my 10yo and I) are out several
times a day moving everyone around so they all get a turn at the "good"
pasture and the good hay and so noone has to be alone all the time. But
we have gotten into a routine with it, so it is not so bad.

And Merry Morning is doing great!

Thanks again,
Warmly, Janice, wondering how Jim's paca girl is doing? Any news?
