[AlpacaTalk] Underweight female......

I’ve told this story before, but in case you didn’t hear it……..I received a dam and 3 mo old cria that had been transported 3000 miles in four days.  I bought her sight unseen and she was skeletal.  She weighed 115 – was nursing, too.  Body score was about a 2.  Long story short, she had EPE……currently referred to as Mycoplasma Haemollama………spelling it wrong, I’m sure.  Anyway, she was treated with Biomycin prior to shipping and we treated her here with an injection and did bloodwork.  Amazingly, she was not anemic and her bloodwork didn’t look that bad.  We boosted her with B vitamins.

I supplemented her separately from the others, so they wouldn’t eat her food, with Calf Manna and extra grain and alfalfa hay – all the hay she could eat. We also put a winter coat on her to help keep her warm so she didn’t have to expend her groceries on warmth.

That girl is due to deliver Sept. 3rd and she now weighs almost 160lbs.  She is full of energy and trots everywhere…….still a chowhound and still gets a little extra.  Her cria wasn’t weaned until May and she is thriving.

If  she were mine and I thought there was something wrong, testing for EPE would be my first course of action, after fecal testing to rule out parasites.

            Good luck!

I’ll keep you all in tune for our blesses event and please keep your fingers crossed for her.  This will be her last cria since she is 14 years old and I believe she has earned her retirement.

She's tiny compared to my other gals. She scores a 4-5 (on a scale of 10) at 107. And now, a couple of months pregant and 110, she looks HUGE. :-)

[AlpacaTalk] RE: female mating

I had a female who had a breech cria a little over a year ago. Our vets here are not very experienced in Alpaca issues. Plus I had not taken an neonatal course nor anything as far as labor & delivery, etc. in Alpacas. My husband had, but he died about 20 months ago. Anyway the vet was unable to turn the cria & chose to deliver vaginally anyway. The cria died.

I did rebred the female. But once again I have no vet here to can do ultrasounds to check on pregnancies & I chose to not do progesterone testing. The female did not act pregnant to me after being bred & due to the time of the year I didn't attempt it after a couple of visits from my male. (by not acting pregnant, she did not spit off the male at any time when I checked).

During the following months the female kept getting on top  of other females............. I noticed this behavior off & on during the winter & spring. In June I had a number of females that I wanted vet checked for potential breeding this summer (they are all maidens) & I took this female along to be checked. I took these alpaca girls to a camelid vet for GYN checks and took one of the vets from the practice here for a learning experience. Basically the female who had the breech cria a year ago is no longer able to breed. Since the vet chose to try & turn the cria & then pull him out vaginally instead of a c/s, there was too much trauma. Her cervix/vagina area is sealed closed due to trauma. She has some hormonal issues due to all of this & that is why she is acting more like a male in trying to mate with other girls (as I understood the issue).

[AlpacaTalk] Male Alpaca development question

I have an alpaca who turned a year old a week ago. Beautiful fiber, great conformation. I have been checking the little ones to be sure they are developing okay and I have noticed that this one does not seem to have a right testicle. I thought I felt one two months ago, but now I can't seem to feel anything on that side.

Has anyone else had this issue? I was hoping to show this boy, but I am not sure if I can or should. Can anyone give me any advise on this one.

Thanks,
