[AlpacaTalk] Underweight female......
I’ve told this story before, but in case you didn’t hear it……..I received a dam and 3 mo old cria that had been transported 3000 miles in four days. I bought her sight unseen and she was skeletal. She weighed 115 – was nursing, too. Body score was about a 2. Long story short, she had EPE……currently referred to as Mycoplasma Haemollama………spelling it wrong, I’m sure. Anyway, she was treated with Biomycin prior to shipping and we treated her here with an injection and did bloodwork. Amazingly, she was not anemic and her bloodwork didn’t look that bad. We boosted her with B vitamins.
I supplemented her separately from the others, so they wouldn’t eat her food, with Calf Manna and extra grain and alfalfa hay – all the hay she could eat. We also put a winter coat on her to help keep her warm so she didn’t have to expend her groceries on warmth.
That girl is due to deliver Sept. 3rd and she now weighs almost 160lbs. She is full of energy and trots everywhere…….still a chowhound and still gets a little extra. Her cria wasn’t weaned until May and she is thriving.
If she were mine and I thought there was something wrong, testing for EPE would be my first course of action, after fecal testing to rule out parasites.
Good luck!
I’ll keep you all in tune for our blesses event and please keep your fingers crossed for her. This will be her last cria since she is 14 years old and I believe she has earned her retirement.

She's tiny compared to my other gals. She scores a 4-5 (on a scale of 10) at 107. And now, a couple of months pregant and 110, she looks HUGE. :-)
