o.k. that is the next thought that I had!  I didn't realize that was a big worry.  I will keep that in mind!  I was thinking having the hay in the back of the barn would help keep the barn warmer....but a fire is NOT a good way to heat the barn!  Thanks for the explanation.  I will hopefully be buying our first acreage this spring and need to set up my barn and pasture for my critters!
 
Maria..sounds like you are getting into the alpaca business.  :)   They are so awesome. 
 
Flossie...great idea on the metal car port!  I will have to look into that!  I want to set things up so they are close to the house so I can look out the window or sit on my deck and watch the critters.  Plus I want a short walk to the barn to do chores in the cold winter.  :)
 
I enjoy all my sweet critters and can hardly wait to have a place of my own to have them with me so I can watch over them.  :)

I am kind of lost on why you were told not to store hay in a barn?  Isn't that what a barn is for?  Or is it not to store in the barn the animals are in??  Can some one explain this to me?

I bought a steel carport with the back end closed. It cost less than $1000 and holds over 3 tons of hay.
