Re: [AlpacaTalk] leptospira
If it is endemic in your area, definitely vaccinate against it. No reason to take unnecessary risks.
The vaccine is Lepto Shield 5. Vaccinate per directions. It is not a CDT or an 8 or 9 way. It is a separate vaccine. Leptospira spreads from wild life. Birds, rats, mice, deer, rabbits bring it in and spread it. If you have cases in your area, vaccinate. An aborted fetus is heartbreaking for owner and alpaca mom and it is preventable. There are documented cases for Lepto in alpacas. Risk management is knowing what is going on in your area and making informed decisions.
My 2 cents.

Heather,I'm not sure that it's in the 7 or 8 way. In Dr. Evans manual has it listed separately and it is listed separately on websites where you wouldpurchase the vaccine. Most farms in our area give CD & T yearly and Ivo once a month. Our vet said there had been documented cases with other livestockin the area. We don't have any other livestock with or near the alpacas and our dogs have been vaccinated for it. The vet was more concerned with the possiblyof it being spread to humans. Also in Dr. Evans manual: Dr. Pat Long recommended it if there are diagnosed cases in your area.I know that we are in the mindset that we need to vaccinate for everything and have created animals that are drug resistant. However, if there are documentedcases, I don't think I'm willing to take the chance of one of my animals (or family members) getting sick because I didn't vaccinate. There are many schools of thought on this issue and people have to do what they are comfortable with.Hopefully, I'll hear from some others about this vaccine.Dixie MinnichHoagland, IN-----Original Message-----

Subject: Re: [AlpacaTalk] leptospiraI don't have very good info for you, but is it in 7 or 8-way vaccines? We used to give those when we started out, but have chosen the "less is more" approach. We switched to CD&T, then in the last few years have stopped with that, too, since we don't feed corn or grain based feed. We are not in M-worm territory, thankfully, but if we were, we'd be giving the Ivo once a month. As I understand it, Lepto is only really a problem if alpacas are run with or near other livestock like sheep or goats. Possibly cows, but I'm not sure on that. It's my understanding that goats especially, are little germ and parasite factories. I hope someone with better info will chime in!HeatherHeather ZelenyWhite Lotus AlpacasOregonHolistic Farm and Elite FleeceOn Mar 19, 2010, at 3:45 PM, dixie.minnich wrote:I have some questions about leptospira vaccination. I recently had a conversation with my vet about this. He thought it would be a good idea to add this vaccination to our protocol but wasn't having trouble locating information about it for alpacas. I've looked in Dr. Evans manual and there are different opinions about this. We do have documented cases in our area. If anyone has experience with this vaccination, could you contact me privately atddm0007@aol.com
