Re: [AlpacaTalk] leptospira

I don't have very good info for you, but is it in 7 or 8-way vaccines? We used to give those when we started out, but have chosen the "less is more" approach. We switched to CD&T, then in the last few years have stopped with that, too, since we don't feed corn or grain based feed. We are not in M-worm territory, thankfully, but if we were, we'd be giving the Ivo once a month.

As I understand it, Lepto is only really a problem if alpacas are run with or near other livestock like sheep or goats. Possibly cows, but I'm not sure on that. It's my understanding that goats especially, are little germ and parasite factories. I hope someone with better info will chime in!

I have some questions about leptospira vaccination. I recently had a conversation with my vet about this. He thought it would be a good idea to add this vaccination to our protocol but wasn't having trouble locating information about it for alpacas. I've looked in Dr. Evans manual and there are different opinions about this. We do have documented cases in our area. If anyone has experience with this vaccination, could you contact me privately atddm0007@aol.com
Thanks.
