Re: [AlpacaTalk] more questions
Oh yes, and we feed 1 cup Mazuri Alpaca Growth and Repro pellets once a day
mixed with some (one handful per 4-5 alpacas) loose Stillwater Alpaca
Minerals to the pregnant and lactating females only. The males don't need pellets,
just the loose minerals, which our boys eat plain.

Alfalfa is ok for alpacas, especially pregnant and nursing dams, but
no more that 1 lb per day. I'd recommend a vitamin/mineral loose mix
formulated specifically for alpacas. Quality Llama Products has a
good selection. My personal choices are Stillwater 104 or Golden
Blend. Evans Blend E is also a good one.
We don't feed grain at our farm, totally against it as it's not what
they evolved to eat. Corn, especially, acidifies the gut and kills
off the microbes in the gut which are what really feed the alpaca.
There are many alpaca pellets out there, but most contain corn,
grain, or other agricultural by-products we prefer not to feed.
Brewer's dried grains...
My current preference is to use 1 cup of alfalfa pellet, 1/2 oz
Golden Blend, 1 oz whole flax seed. Mix it up with a bit of wheat
germ oil or rice bran oil to make the flax seed and mineral stick to
the pellet. This would be a ration for one alpaca, for one day.
I have no experience with anything but orchard grass. We feed 2nd
cutting orchard grass hay. As far as what's available in your area,
your local feed store can help, and local alpaca breeders will be
more than happy to give you help.
