[Alpacasite] Re: $205,000 Female
Hi Sonda,
I too am a small farm, and a newbie. Personally, I don't think
prices are good or bad for small breeders. Totally agree with the
horse industry analogy. In my breed, where a good breeding animal
will for 10K - 50K, I remember being shocked when one of the
stallions went for 1.5 M. Exciting for sure, and gave us something
to talk about for years, but really nothing to me as a "pet" owner.
I'm not sure I agree with these record sales indicating that the
industry is stong. More like, as someone already mentioned, the
American Way. But I don't think its a bad thing, and don't forsee a
crash in the market. There is too much discussion along the line of
what John M was sayng about the fiber market. If we keep in mind
that eventually it will become a fiber market, and don't try to sweep
those figures under the rug (even if they are debatable) - I think
the industry will be fine. There is discussion of what to do with
older animals, geldings and animals needing re-homing. They may not
all be pleasant, or civil, but at least we are talking about it.
As for this small farm, my goal is to breed (eventually) the next
Invincible, or Misty Maiden, or...
As Rick says, life IS good.
