Re: [AlpacaTalk] showmanship/halter tips?

Hi Emaly,

So you got an Alpaca! Well things are just a little different. It depends on the Judge - some do check for neutering some don't. They will ask you to show the teeth so they can check how well the teeth meet the palate. If you take your arm up under the chin and two fingers to open the split lips this usually works very well-just parctice this so your animal does not freek in the ring. They do check the fiber, first they will run their hands over the animal to check ridge cage and size of chest. next they will feel and seperate fiber in three places upper shoulder, mid. blanket, and rump. They are checking for consistency in crimp, length, and feel. Some of them even pull a small tuff out to put over their arm--they think they can approx. micron count this way--who knows! Otherwise same as llamas. Good luck!

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] showmanship/halter tips?

Hi,

I'm getting ready to show my gelding alpaca in our first showmanship

class. Any tips on what I should expect, or what I will need to do in the

ring? Will the judge check genitalia? What about fleece? Same for the

non-breeder halter class. We've shown in a shorn halter class (in August),

but never in spring when there is fleece on the animal! I've shown in llama

showmanship and halter classes for years, but alpacas are a bit different.

Any tips you can give for either class would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Emaly
