Re: [AlpacaTalk] Best place for an Alpaca Farm?
Hi Dave,
I live in Southern Maryland and I think it is an ideal climate for alpacas.
We still have all 4 seasons, but I feel we have a moderate Winter and
Summer. We live an hour south of Washington DC and about 80 minutes south
of Baltimore so there is access to good doctors, hospitals, museums and
cultural activities as well as the quant home town opportunities and
lifestyle.
In fact over the past 3 years we have not had any real measurable snowfall
of over 2" and very few snow days for the kids. It does snow here and gives
a pretty dusting or covering now and then, but is usually gone within 24
hours or less. Our summers are generally mild, but we do have a few days or
up to a week when we have heat indexes over 100. Those days are usually the
last week of July or first week of August. When I first began breeding
alpacas, people told me our summers would be too extreme to have babies.
Well I am a teacher and summer has been the best time for us to have babies.
Last year they all came in May and June, which was ideal weather. The year
before we had a July 13th baby and the weather was glorious! So we try and
have summer babies now, but really our weather is nice April through
November. Some people do have babies in December through March as well, you
need to be sure newborns get dried quickly and are kept in for a few days
during those months so you have to be extra diligent during those months.
If you decide to come explore the area, let me know and I'll help you in any
way I can.
