Re: [AlpacaTalk] The Children's Act for Responsible Employment (CARE Act, HR 3564)
It also would not have prohibited children from farm work, it would only restrict the number of hours worked to the limitations for all other industries, and prohibit them from unsafe working conditions.
Laurel, can you explain WHY you protested it? It seems to make very sound sense to me. It exempts family farms, so nobody can claim that their children are affected except insofar as they might be prohibited from taking employment at somebody else's farm, somebody who might not be as concerned for their safety as their own parents would. It ensures that children are not put to work in grain silos which are extremely dangerous; it ensures that children are not required to work on tractors without roll-over bars (I sure as heck wouldn't want my kid on one!). It makes safety for children the paramount concern in employment situations. It does not bar children from performing any acts on a farm owned and operated by their parents, who presumably will themselves have the child's best interests at heart and would not expose them to hazardous conditions. I'm just curious what is so objectionable about any of that.

I heard it on the news last nite that it was going back to the drawing board due to pressure placed on the USDA.
