Re: [AlpacaTalk] fleece shows
Thanks to all for info on fleeces being entered at shows. Is there money awards at shows for animals and/or fleece?

Good Question! You are supposed to use a fleece which has been off your animal no longer than one year....if you shear in April, then use a fleece from last April, 2007. the age of the animal is calculated as of the date of that shearing as well. So if my boy was 10 months in April, 2007...that is his "date of shearing" age. He might now be about 16 months old in "real time" but that was his age at date of shearing.
Touch of fleece usually stays about the same unless you were unlucky enough to bag it up with any moisture in it...then it smells musty. Also, it is possible for moths to get in after a time, so boxing up with a few bars of "Irish Spring" in the bottom...or several dryer squares helps to maintain the fleece quality.
Good luck ----showing your fleeces is a very economical and satisfactory way for a new farm to "get out there" in the beginning. I think it is always a good thing to show as many of your good fleeces as you can.

Ok, I'm new to the Alpaca world and haven't shown them or their fleece as of yet; but, how can anyone tell when or how long ago a fleece had been shorn?????? Does the look and/or touch of fleece change after time?
