[AlpacaTalk] re: Need a new perspective- update

My thanks to those who emailed and called :))
Vet came out, her cervix is nice and tight, no torsion and no softening.  We think it is the cria's position- that it is pressing on the nerves back there and making her very uncomfortable.  Hopefully the cria will reposition before the birth, it looks to be a big one- she has had a 20 lb cria before, and she is not a big girl- size wise that is.

My vet has VERY big hands, I am always amazed at how gentle he is and how he can get those hands in those, er... small places!  I am so glad we found this vet, horse vet for 30 years, and willing to learn all about alpacas and llamas, *and* get the rest of his vet staff involved too.  Now we have a choice of 4 vets in that office, and they will all see alpacas.  They wouldn't in the begriming of the 'wooing' process :))

We gave her a cocktail before the exam and she took it like a champ!  We are following Dr. Evan's protocol for this situation, with Banamine and walking.  She is textbook spot on for this type of problem, makes a good point to get the updated versions of Evan's book- mine doesn't have this section.
Since the exam she hasn't done it again, but she is sort of stoned right now LOL!

Will keep y'all up to date.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] "New" research from ARF forwarded by Alpaca Registry

Hi Susan,

The only way I can think of would be if someone told them.  Nothing gets around this industry faster than a rumor no one wants anyone to know!  (smile)

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Need another perspective

As long as she appears to be healthy and you continue to see fetal movement, I'd just keep an eye on her.

Keep us posted!

Okay, here's the situation:
11 year old due next month female.  She is *extremely* easily stressed, and has delivered prematurely in the past due to stressors.  Taking her to the vet at this point will induce labor and leave us with a preemie and even having the vet out to do an exam here is risky (not to mention it will cost us upwards of $200 just to get her here).
She is huge- even for her and she carries big babies.
She is eating- vigorously, drinking, peeing and pooping normally.  It is not too hot today, yesterday it was.  Very active fetal movement.

She is VERY predictable in her labor behavior, we have had her since she was a yearling. There are two things she always does; her teats get full- very full, even when she delivered early- and she lays on her side sort of propped up, delivering laying down. She also rubs her face in the hay *instead* of eating it.

Right now she is doing this weird sort of thing, where she turns around like a dog before laying down and sort of rocking on her side, ending up propped up.  No rolling, no pushing.  Just this sort of... thing. I noticed it yesterday afternoon and she is still doing it- between eating everything that isn't nailed down. She is rubbing her face in the hay, *and* eating it.

I have seen her turn a baby before, it *could* be that (once she did this and looked like she was going to deliver, football bulge and all, did it all night then jumped up and went another 2 weeks before delivering).  This is a little different.  She is breathing more heavily- not labored per-say but just a little heavier than the other late term gals.  This gal runs chubby, she always gets into shape after nursing her crias, but then gains a lot during her pregnancy.

She is undoubtedly uncomfortable, but the cria is big, and yesterday it was laying sideways- oy.

So..... what do you think?

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: I Wish...Alpacanation.....had listed...

I totally agree that alpaca is being priced too low right now.  I think one of the major reasons is that the yarn stores are getting alpaca yarn from overseas and are paying much less.  I was horrified to recently find quality baby alpaca yarn at my local yarn store being sold for $7.99/120 yard skein!  I took the store owner aside and said they were selling it WAY too low - I mentioned our prices and those of other farms and websites.  They did raise their prices, but as a small farm, we just cannot compete.  The owner offered to sell my yarn through the store and expressed an interest in supporting local ranches, but we could not even come close to what they are paying for overseas yarn, so I opted instead to sell it myself.  I wish we could limit USA sales to USA alpaca like we do via the registry closing importation of animals.  I always try to buy Made in USA products anyway and hopefully more people are doing the same.
