[AlpacaTalk] re: Rainbow Bridge

Hi Laurel,
Well, with the closest vet almost 50 miles away it costs about $200 for a ranch visit these days, plus the almost $100 for the euthanasia, so that isn't an option.

We took her in this morning, it was very peaceful and fast- we do have a great small animal vet who took one of our cats under her wing years ago and found a specialist in L.A. who offered to do a very sensitive, risky surgery on him for us for free.  She is an angel.

Now we just need to heal, and that empty dog bed and her son wandering around lost will make that all the harder.  She was the most perfect dog, and my best friend, truly.

Rachelle,
We have our vet come to our house to put our dogs to sleep.
If your dog vet is not the same as your farm vet, your farm vet may be
willing.

It is much easier on everyone that way. We are very
blessed to have a great guy, Dr. Scot Hosket who takes care of both the
large and small animals here. Might be worth a try?

Sorry for
you, it is never easy

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Please recommend a publication for Alpacas

Hi Mike:

Camelid Dynamics is great for handling. We also like Caring for Alpacas & Llamas, Clare Hoffman DVM
& William J. Foreyt's Veterinary Parasitology Reference Manual..
(although if you want something different...  Cigarette Sue)
I have a friend who's a rabid non-smoker after many years and he published a book aimed at school age children and their parents.....

Not alpacas,  but still a good choice if you have kids and will save her money..

Best of luck.

Hello Talkers-my mother in law has forgotten my birthday and she feels real bad - so bad in fact she would like to purchase a subscription to a magazine for me. I suggested our AOBA dues but got laughter, and well deserved so apparently guilt only goes so far. We get the Alpaca Magazine at this time and would like to find another publication regarding Alpacas that would be helpful. Please make your recommendations what you read and why you like it. We heard of one called Camalid Dynamics which is a broad publication about Camalids - hope I got the name right.

Look forward to your ideas, Michael

>>Do you have a favorite "tool" that you use/carry to disperse the
DE onto the piles?<<

I use old parmesean and/or non-dairy creamer containers. The former has the nice sprinkler top that I use for over feed and the latter has a wider opening that is still narrow enough to not make a mess but is better for bigger areas (plus I get the large size creamer so I don't have to refill as often).

I am so sorry that you and your family are having to go through this. We have all been there---it is not easy---I try to take comfort in the fact that my animals all have a good life with me, that they have been well-loved and taken care of. And that the loss is entirely mine, not theirs.

When we have had our dogs put down, we have taken them in their beds in the back of the car and had the vet come out in the parking lot to the car. Very peaceful but still heart-wrenching.

hi Rachelle - when you have to have a beloved animal put down, it is the final gift you can give them - the alternative is to let them suffer til the end.

i had to have the vet come to the house last summer and put down my 15 year old best friend - i lay on the floor with her and it was very peaceful for her - then i fell apart afterward

my heart goes out to you and your son at this time - it never becomes easier

RE: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Rainbow bridge?

Rachelle, I am so sorry. I also had the vet come to my house to put my very old Newfie down. There was no stress involved for her. I sat on the floor and she put her head in my lap while I petted her and she actually fell asleep before she got any meds. I've done it the other way and if I had a choice I would have the vet come out.
