[AlpacaTalk] ARS Update
There were a fair number of reports in the last 24 hours, including two
deaths. From looking through the information I have several impressions.
* There are still new cases of outbreak in herds throughout the US.
* In most cases it moves goes through the herd quickly, but for the most
part uneventfully. * Deaths continue to be reported, but the
mortality rate is decreasing. I do realize this is no comfort to those
that have lost an alpaca.
Total herd size reported: 3904
Total number reported infected: 1909
Total number of deaths reported: 42 from owners and 6+ from
vets/universities
AlpacaWatch will continue collecting reports, and compiling the data. I
do hope that the mortality rate continues to decrease. There are likely
a number of contributing reasons. I hope that one of them was the
distribution of information to alpaca owners and veterinarians. This did
increase awareness of ARS symptoms, and there for many alpacas received
quick and decisive treatment.
