Re: [AlpacaTalk] Alpaca with thick crusty skin

Interesting! My first thought was to treat for mites, anyway, with Frontline spray. Or, I have used Frontline spot on, as well. Just put divide up the dose for the giant breed dogs around the areas that are affected.

And, I would have suggested either sulphur lime dip, which is used in treatmemt of demodex mites in dogs, or Nu-Stock, which is a paste/cream made from Pine oil and sulphur. Of course, sulphur is the medicated part of Selsun Blue.

Hi Susan,

I have seen something like this on one of our older production girls---and our vet, Rob Pollard recommended that we wash her with a "Selsun Blue" type shampoo and let it sit a while on her.  It really did the trick----We were not showing her,  so washing was not a consideration in that way.  We just waited for a nice warm day, put her in the catch pen, then shampooed her to a lather and let it stay on for five minutes.  After that, we rinsed well.  I might add that she really seemed to enjoy it when I rubbed the crusty parts that needed to have lots of suds rubbed in.

She just stood there and let me do it---and you know how much they normally appreciate a lot of touching!

It did really clear up her skin…also left her fleece nice and shiny and soft---did not feel 'mediciny" like it might have!

Best of luck with your boy,

Allison

My vet is coming out to neuter one of my boys and she is going to
check this then. One of my other geldings has about a six inch by
three inch patch of very thick crusty skin along his backbone above
his shoulders. There are a few other spots, but this is the biggest.
The strange thing is that it is not at all red,and hair continues to
grow just fine. He is a white suri, about two years old. It does not
seem to bother him at all, no apparent itching or irritation. Has
anyone else seen this in their animals before? I'm sure the vet will
take a skin scraping, but from what I have read about mites, it is not
fitting the description of any type of mite.

Thanks,
Susan
