[Alpacasite] Re: Anyone giving BVD vaccine?

Dear Steve,

While I didn't read Dr. Evans book I would like to refer to some excerpts from the latest article "Further Thoughts on BVDV in Alpacas" in Camelid Quarterly written by Nancy Carr, MD with reference to an article written in Sept. issue of CQ titled "Can You Vaccinate Alpacas for BVD" :

"The article on vaccinating alpacas for BVD was written by Dr. Ed Doornenbal of Wyeth Animal Health, the company that makes many BVDV vaccines. He quite correctly does not make any claims about the efficacy of BVDV vaccines in alpacas. Until research is done, there is no way of knowing if the vaccines are effective in camelids. Breeders do need to know that vaccines are not 100% effective in cattle, and if they choose to vaccinate their alpacas or llamas, that vaccination does not take the place of biosecurity measures."

"Dr. Dubovi, based at Cornell University in New York is quoted on the website: www.diaglab.vet.cornell.edu/issues/alpacas.asp "I would hate to see vaccination start. I think that this can be eradicated without vaccination." one of his points is if there is widespread vaccination a breeder won't know if a positive antibody test in a dam is from immunization or natural infection".

Dr. Dubovi will be one of the speakers at the upcoming UMass Camelid Conference and the topic he is covering is BVD in alpacas. We will be attending so we can get as much info as we can on this subject.
