Re: [Alpacasite] Marketing
Hey all,
This reminds me...the last time I tried to purchase through AlpacaNation, I
contacted three farms. In the case of two of the farms, the females were
due soon. I was told that they were no longe for sale because they were
due soon! In the case of the third farm, the female had been sold 6 months
before. Anyway, my point is to remind everyone to keep your sites updated,
wherever they are.
Take care, Libby

Have you looked at AlpacaNation's "Alpaca Farm & Breeders" guide
lately??? I can recall when AlpacaNation first hit the streets. It
always seemed to be nice alternative for average-sized farms that
didn't want the hassle of maintaining their own web site. Man have
things changed!!! I like to be able to pass along recommendations
to my customers so ran a few numbers, and was amazed at what I
found. In some states, AlpacaNation's listings exceed those on
AOBA's Farm and Ranch Locator (web site). I only checked a handful,
but in the state of Ohio alone, there are 230 listings with
AlpacaNation, and only 83 listed with AOBA (Farm & Ranch Locator)!!!
I'm not endorsing AlpacaNation, I'm not a member, and my web site is
as old-fashioned and cheap as they come (self-done in HTML on free
AOL server space) – it's just that I hate to see AOBA bypassed as
the primary marketing venue.
What if we stepped back and took a look at things in a different
light.
Lisa, Great post!
I also remember when AN started up. A whole whopping 17 farms listed for
Ohio. Ours being one of the 17. My how far they have come. Joyce and I
didn't
have anything to sell but thought it might be a great way to get our farm
name
out there.
AOBA has also been a great way to market also through the show circuit. I
remember meeting our first breeders. After buying our maidens we decided
to
breed one of our best Alpacas to their Herdsire. The breeder and I started
to
discus marketing strategies and he insisted the show circuit was not the
way to
go. Stating ribbons mean nothing and it's a waste of time, money and
energy.
Wrong!!!
That same breeder suggested strongly 18 months ago that multis and fancy
Alpacas were worthless in the industry. Wrong again. His point was
contamination
a little closed minded I might say. Knowing they can and do produce
solids.
Funny how things work out in breeding and marketing.
That same breeder attends shows and won with a multi. LOL seems to be
expanding his horizons. Good for him.
Joyce and I are not experts by any strech but we look at advertising as any
buisness would. The more exposure you have the better chance of
opportunity.
This industry has been afforded many tools and resources through AOBA,
it's
affiliates, ARI and the veterinarians we all use.
It's all about being open minded and not being afraid to try new things.
Thinking out of the box so to speak.
Such as yourself.
