Re: [Alpacasite] Runny Eyes?

Paul, this is not unusual in young alpacas and can be taken care of
easily. First, dip a washcloth into some warm water and gently get
the "crud" out of the eyes. Be gentle and they do like the warm water.

Once cleaned, look at the conjunctival tissues surrounding the eyes
to see if they are red or inflamed. If red, then it would be
appropriate to get a vet out. If there is an infection, then it may
be necessary to put in what is called "ophthalmic antibiotic
ointment". Do not use the eye ointments that also have steroid in
it. This is often labelled "1% HC" - the HC being an abbreviation
for hydrocortisone.

Other steroids include dexamethasone, triamcinolone, etc. Note the
"-one" at the end indicating a steroid.

Many vets have this ophthalmic ointment (with and without
steroid). It may simple be necessary to wash out the eyes for a day
or two and this may clear up without and need for daily ointments or
other medications.

Let us know how just washing the eyes works out . . . .
