[AlpacaTalk] RE: ear trouble
I have been doing a bit of research about the possibility of "ear ticks"
that can't be seen raised here. Scary possibility. I have not
considered the fact that my boy is holding his ear at a 90 degree angle
for the past week an emergency. Since the dog occ has an ear event
(shaking, scratching, or holding funny) and boric acid clears it right
up I haven't been overly concerned, but have put it in the "que" as
something that needed my attention. Well after reading around for a
bit this morning I am now quite concerned.
Apparently these "soft bodied" ear ticks are killers. Great.
My reading thus far tells me that Catrol IV (which I have never heard of
and my local Tractor Supply does not carry) is the treatment of
choice. Superior to Frontline ear spray and liquid ivermec......tho
the liquid ivermec mixed with mineral oil intuitively seems like a good
treatment option to me (maybe because I have on hand and can use right
now), both of which have also been recommended for ear ticks.
I have to do more reading, but just thinking out loud here and asking
for other thoughts, experiences, etc......it seems to me that if this is
a soft bodied tick as it is described then DE or Boric acid either one
would be an effective treatment and would kill the little nasties.
