[AlpacaTalk] RE: ear trouble
<<<I HATE ear problems! My cattle dog has a beagle head with the beagle
ears and she has constant ear wet oozy ears that I constantly battle. I
have had her to the vet several times and on antibiotics and ear drops.
I finally started sprinkling baby powder in her ear hoping to keep it
drier if it's from sweating. Check the outside good to for a tick that
might be bothering him too.>>>
Jody and Wendy -
I have used boric acid for decades for dog and cat ear problems. I once
had a dog that no matter what we/the vet did he just had chronic ear
problems. I can't count how much money we threw at that problem. No
meds worked. Then somewhere I heard about using boric acid. It was
the miracle cure! Same with cats - prone to ear mites that are hard to
treat. A little boric acid will clear them right up. I have always
had great success with it. The trick is don't get the 3% stuff sold in
pharmacies for eye wash. You have to get the 99% stuff sold (these
days) as roach killer. I started using it for roaches long before it
was marketed as such and you could purchase it cheaply at good
pharmacies......99%USP. I get the roach killer kind that comes in a
squeeze type bottle with a pointed tip on it. It is supposed to used to
kind of squirt into corners and behind appliances and such, but works
great for dusting into ears. Then stand back the dog will shake its
head and a cloud of white dust will come billowing out! You want to
put in enough to coat all the ear canal down as deeply as possible.
Jody, I used to have a dog that love to go swimming in the lake and she
kept a sort of constant low level ear infection going on. A mixture of
half and half rubbing alcohol and vinegar will eliminate that. The
alcohol dries the ear and the vinegar takes care of low level
bacteria. I kept a mixture on hand at all times, in a dropper bottle,
and would always use it before and after each swim and the dog never had
another ear problem. Be careful with that baby powder - a lot of it has
asbestos in it; you sure don't want her or you to inhale it.
