Re: [AlpacaTalk] Persistant Hymen Question
I'll be happy to hear answers too. I have a 2-year old female in my herd who has this condition as well. After reading all the material I could find about it, I decided not to pursue surgical options because I read that even if the surgery were successful, the hymen could grow back (yikes! imagine the delivery nightmare!). I removed the gal from my breeding program, but would be very interested to hear if others have had success with surgery and the female has gone on to have female offspring without the condition, and herself without recurrence of the tissue growth. I'd also like to know if it's considered a genetic issue, although this is the first I've had, and I have a number of offspring out of her sire and dam, all of whom have delivered or sired excellent crias.

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] Persistant Hymen Question
We have encountered a persistent Hymen in a client's female here for breeding.
She will be 3 years old this fall. Per our vets recommendation we have done drug
(estrogen) therapy and gave the last dose yesterday. To this point there has
been no softening of the hymen via digital inspection. The next step will be
surgical if it is not softer in 7 days.

I would like to get responses from those who dealt with this condition directly
and not antidotel, since we have not had a case till now.
Our clients are aware of the risks and would like to make a sound decision base
on actual outcomes. Dr. Evan has given us his opinion and we would like to cross
referance to others who have had to deal with this also, other vets welcome!
My questions are:
1. Was surgery successful?
2. How long after surgery was breeding attempted and successful?
3. Was a pregnancy achieved?
4. How long after surgery was pregnancy achieved?
5. Was the birth normal or assisted, explain.
6. Any evidence of this being genetic?
If this is easier to respond over the phone please call 920-901-5901
