Judith,
I'm in NY too and I still have to pay $15 for the rabies--what should I be asking my vet? What lab does your vet use for BVD? I also pool, my vet uses Cornell, and the espensive part is the stupid FedEx...
I try to lower my vet bills by combining as much of my routine vet care as I can at one time to spread out the travel charge and farm call, e.g. I have 2 maidens I want to have checked before breeding, so I'll do that with all my non-preg rabies shots, and my ultrasounding, and spring fecals all next week. This year, I am also considering not having the vet out the day after routine births and instead have her out after the last birth and do all the BVD (to pool they have to be taken within a few weeks of each other) and moms' rabies then.
Thanks!

Sometimes I don't know how she makes a living (well, I think they make it up on the pet trade, actually, 'cause I get no deals there, that's for sure except a group rate for office calls). I just had 6 BVD tests run, and it cost me $72; the lab charged $36/pool and they pooled 5 and tested one separately, so it breaks down to $12/test. If I'd had to have 10 tested, the per test fee would have only been $7.20. Beats AOBA. I love my state ag dept. too!

I live in an area where a lot of wildlife passes through our pastures - usually small stuff like 'possums, skunks and raccoons, but occasionally larger animals like foxes, and of course one always worries about stray dogs. I'd rather be safe than sorry. I've seen my herd surround small critters - probably just out of curiosity, and a couple of my females have tried to stomp stray cats, so you never know just how much interaction there might be between your herd and wildlife or strays. Another hazard might be if a 'possum or 'coon tried to take shelter in the barn during the winter. I know my next-door neighbors who have a dairy farm often find and shoot wildlife in their barns or storage buildings, so it's always on my mind. I know there's some question as to whether there is any need for annual injections or whether 3-year injections would suffice. At this point, since the vets prefer to innoculate annually, I just have it
