Re: [AlpacaTalk] Do you give your alpacas yearly rabie shots?
I love some of the NYS programs. For example, every 7 years, they pay for my entire herd to be TB tested, so I have a certified TB-free herd.

Oh, my, thanks. I will check and see what the ag dept in WV has to offer.

My vet charges $20 for the farm visit (and splits that with other farms if she has to visit several in my neighborhood at the same time), and $2 for the shot. NYS underwrites part of the cost of the injections for livestock. I don't know what WV does, but the Ag Department in some states does help, which is why it costs less to geld an alpaca than to neuter a dog around here.

Wherever do you get a vet to give a rabies shot for $2?
I would think it would be at least $75 for the farm visit, and then $15 per animal for the rabies shot, per animal.
I am not trying to be sarcastic, I would really like to know. I am just starting in Alpacas, and if there is a cheaper way to do it I would like to know it.
I can give my own shots for other things, but in our state rabies must be given by a vet.

I do. I live in an area where a lot of wildlife passes through our pastures - usually small stuff like 'possums, skunks and raccoons, but occasionally larger animals like foxes, and of course one always worries about stray dogs. I'd rather be safe than sorry. I've seen my herd surround small critters - probably just out of curiosity, and a couple of my females have tried to stomp stray cats, so you never know just how much interaction there might be between your herd and wildlife or strays. Another hazard might be if a 'possum or 'coon tried to take shelter in the barn during the winter. I know my next-door neighbors who have a dairy farm often find and shoot wildlife in their barns or storage buildings, so it's always on my mind. I know there's some question as to whether there is any need for annual injections or whether 3-year injections would suffice. At this point, since the vets prefer to innoculate annually, I just have it done. Who knows? It might be the best $2 I spend all year!
