Re: [AlpacaTalk] RE: Shearing Pyrs

I have always shorn the pyrs with NO PROBLEMS for 12 yrs or so.I actually I saved the life of one female---she had gotten into a fight with something while working.Could not see it or feel it due to the heavy coat she had.She had a huge abscess from puncher wounds from the fight. My Pyrs have always had the full coat come back every winter. Best of Luck on what you decide to do!!  T

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] RE: Shearing Pyrs

<<<..my question is how many of you actually shear them down to the skin
or close to it? It seems to me that getting their thick undercoat off them
is more important then removing the lengthy guard hairs but I have seen it
done. I noticed the dogs still have that thick undercoat, it is just
shorter. I have spoken to professional groomers who say don't shear
them....just get the undercoat out and shave their bellies so they can cool
off.
Opinions?

Laura, the LGD list folks say do not shave/shear the Pyrs and similar dogs.
I had my *black* long hair GSD with an extremely heavy undercoat sheared
one year thinking I was doing him a huge favor. He developed horrible
skin problems and his coat did not grow back for a full 3 yrs. It was 3
yrs of misery with hot spots, intense itching, and tons of skin issues,
and I will never do it again. He finally has his coat back, no more
skin issues, and no hot spots last summer with his full coat.
