[AlpacaTalk] Re: Shearing Cria and question regarding LGD PYRS

I don’t remember the model but they were just Wahl animal clippers.  I have recently ordered a better set, but they are not expensive.  I hope they will be powerful enough to trim my Pyrs’s bellies!  Andis Animal Clipper With Detachable Bladehttp://www.horse.com/Search.aspx?query=Andis+Animal+Clipper

Our shears are Premiere 4000S and I am still intimidated by them for a dog or cria.  Maybe this year I’ll be more confident!

Anyone out there with Great Pyrenees………question:  In the past, I have used a rake to remove excess undercoat on the dogs when they start blowing their undercoats.  I also trim the pants and shave the bellies nice and clean……….my question is how many of you actually shear them down to the skin or close to it?  It seems to me that getting their thick undercoat off them is more important then removing the lengthy guard hairs but I have seen it done.  I noticed the dogs still have that thick undercoat, it is just shorter.  I have spoken to professional groomers who say don’t shear them……….just get the undercoat out and shave their bellies so they can cool off.

Opinions?
