I just blew their undercoats out and trimmed their bellies and pants and they did alright. It was a time consuming chore, but I know they felt better for it. I think shearing would be faster but not necessarily better, so we will stick with what we’ve been doing. Just wanted to get a feel for what others had good results with. I have seen some Pyrs that have been sheared, but their undercoat was still there, all matted and knarly and I know I don’t want that for my polar bearies.

Laura, the LGD list folks say do not shave/shear the Pyrs and similar dogs.
I had my *black* long hair GSD with an extremely heavy undercoat sheared
one year thinking I was doing him a huge favor. He developed horrible
skin problems and his coat did not grow back for a full 3 yrs. It was 3
yrs of misery with hot spots, intense itching, and tons of skin issues,
and I will never do it again. He finally has his coat back, no more
skin issues, and no hot spots last summer with his full coat.
