RE: [AlpacaTalk] Do you give your alpacas yearly rabie shots?
Here in VA, the required rabies vax for dogs must be given by a licensed Vet in order to be recognized……..however, there are NO laws concerning other animals, so we give all our goats, alpacas and cats their rabies shots. When buying the vaccine and giving it ourselves, it costs us between $2 and $3.
My farm Vet will give the dogs theirs for $8 (her vaccine) and if I have other shots for anyone, she’ll use my vaccine and give them at no charge.
We don’t have her come out just for the shots, though. It is usually for an u/s or gelding or something more serious and the shot giving is a secondary reason.
She increased her farm visit charge to $33, up from $30 last year. I think this is a very reasonable charge. Our horse vet also treats alpacas, but she is much more expensive, beginning with the farm visit at $65!
There is a huge difference in prices between cow vets and horse vets, it seems!

Wherever do you get a vet to give a rabies shot for $2?
I would think it would be at least $75 for the farm visit, and then $15 per animal for the rabies shot, per animal.
I am not trying to be sarcastic, I would really like to know. I am just starting in Alpacas, and if there is a cheaper way to do it I would like to know it.
I can give my own shots for other things, but in our state rabies must be given by a vet.
