RE: [AlpacaTalk] RE: Allison

Hi Janice,

Thanks---I am interested in nutrition and family---and it does take precedence over AOBA stuff…  All day yesterday I was a way at Mom’s---not by any computer and not listening to the general baying of the dog pack trying to chew up Jim Patrick.  Heck----we were not home until very late.  I was trying to eat dinner at 10 pm…  Most of the stuff about political questions is a tempest in a pot of tea anyhow.  Some folks don’t want facts---they just hunt to make a stink….any stink.  So, with those groups…I won’t engage or answer anyhow.  I will answer respectful questions asked to gain facts upon which to reflect.  But I will not respond to every “mad dog” type of inquiry.

We  were doing much more important stuff…  went with my spouse over to Mom’s facility and spent a whole day unpacking her belongings.  Because it is now a very small load, her furniture and belongings were on a truck with other customer’s belongings and carted all over heck and gone for almost a month.

With very old people, not having their own stuff around is a big cause of depression and anxiety---so having it in transit has been very hard for her and she wanted it all out of the boxes and arranged NOW…

I could not get it all done.  It is even harder with her in the room because she vacillates now and wants  furniture moved endless times from place to place in the rooms she now has before she thinks it looks “right”.

Some things she did not remember as hers, some things she thought were missing…and she did not want to leave even to eat or relieve herself.  I will bring her home made food for a while…she loves the stuff that is like she cooked when we were small.  I can’t eat it…but I know that she will.   I am diabetic and I eat a lot more fresh veggies and fruits than my childhood house hold ever did.  We eat a broader range of items too---Kashi makes some good whole grain mixes, for instance, that are good for everyone, but especially diabetic diets.

While we were out---the older dog in our house had a major tummy upset so one of our pleasures yesterday was returning to his problem in the house….I have him on  yoghurt and brown rice with homemade broth….trying to rest and re establish the gut…  I think he is a little better this morning..more broth, more rice…a little yoghurt.  Maybe this evening some lamb bits with the fat gone…mixed into rice.  I don’t want to have him lose ground.

We are having a cold snap here in Washington state, so I am also feeding our pacas a bit extra---pellet and some hot oatmeal for the  preggos…They sure love that!!!

Until we have a warmer barn, I have to watch close.  We moved girls who were on a warmer state’s breeding schedule so we now have girls due in what is still winter here…I don’t want to lose crias to hypothermia…so being gone even a little while is a risk---it was hard being gone all day yesterday.

IN any case, thanks for the good thoughts and the good advice, I try to keep up on dietary matters---both for the people and the animals.  It does matter----what goes into the system strongly affects health.

Your background and knowledge----and, more importantly, your care and interest are appreciated.

Allison

<<< She does need something.her appetite is not what it was before this
episode.
Oh well.life is a fatal disease-which means we just have to put as much
quality into the space between birth and death as possible!

Allison>>>

I attended the funeral recently of a dear friend who does, uh did,
amazing rescue work. The minister spoke of the "dash" between date
born and date died. He gave a nice talk about the importance of the
dash :-).

It may take you a while to find Natren ..... some health food stores
carry it, and you can order directly from the company; they are
wonderful. However in the meantime, since her appetite is already
suffering (and that is a common side effect of antibiotics...and age and
illness) you might want to go ahead and get her some good quality yogurt
if you think she will like it - the greek yogurt is good and tasty, lots
of people like it that don't care for regular yogurt. Goat's milk
yogurt, if you can find it, is tops in flavor. And you could also get
her some good quality kefir which is also loaded with the beneficial
probiotics......and a lot of sugar, which is usually not a good
thing, but in the case of someone needing the calories and the heavy
sweet taste to stimulate their appetite might not be such a bad thing.
The sugar however will negate a good bit of the benefits of the
probiotics. But sometimes just getting calories into someone is the
most important thing. Once the appetitie starts to head south it is
critical to turn it around before it is lost totally. Once the
appetite shuts down it is very hard to get it going again.....that is
what happens with anorexia and cancer. If you can find the Natren
powders you can mix them in with the kefir or yogurt for a boost, even
tho you are supposed to take them on an empty stomach for maximum effect
or even ice cream or whatever it takes. They probably have her on a
very bland very boring tasteless diet. The most important thing is to
find something she likes, will eat, and that has lots of calories......
a well baked potato loaded with butter/sour cream; potato soup, ice
cream, those sorts of things.

I am happy to help you in any way I can; we should probably take this
off list before we try Heather's patience with the OT. I have kept it
here thus far in case anyone else is interested in this info. BTW, I am
a nutritionist in private practice and before private practice was a
hospital dietitian and have worked extensively with this
population....but don't rely on the hospital dietitian! Few are as
interested in health as I am; most just "go by the book" and the "book"
is hopelessly out of date. They are what I call mathematical
dietitians....forever counting and adding and subtracting things.....and
forget these are actual humans with a will and desires and tastes.

Good luck, and don't hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance.
Warmly, Janice
