I attended the funeral recently of a dear friend who does, uh did,
amazing rescue work. The minister spoke of the "dash" between date
born and date died. He gave a nice talk about the importance of the
dash :-).

It may take you a while to find Natren ..... some health food stores
carry it, and you can order directly from the company; they are
wonderful. However in the meantime, since her appetite is already
suffering (and that is a common side effect of antibiotics...and age and
illness) you might want to go ahead and get her some good quality yogurt
if you think she will like it - the greek yogurt is good and tasty, lots
of people like it that don't care for regular yogurt. Goat's milk
yogurt, if you can find it, is tops in flavor. And you could also get
her some good quality kefir which is also loaded with the beneficial
probiotics......and a lot of sugar, which is usually not a good
thing,but in the case of someone needing the calories and the heavy
sweet taste to stimulate their appetite might not be such a bad thing.
The sugar however will negate a good bit of the benefits of the
probiotics. But sometimes just getting calories into someone is the
most important thing. Once the appetitie starts to head south it is
critical to turn it around before it is lost totally. Once the
appetite shuts down it is very hard to get it going again.....that is
what happens with anorexia and cancer. If you can find the Natren
powders you can mix them in with the kefir or yogurt for a boost, even
tho you are supposed to take them on an empty stomach for maximum effect
or even ice cream or whatever it takes. They probably have her on a
very bland very boring tasteless diet. The most important thing is to
find something she likes, will eat, and that has lots of calories......
a well baked potato loaded with butter/sour cream; potato soup, ice
cream, those sorts of things.

I am happy to help you in any way I can; we should probably take this
off list before we try Heather's patience with the OT. I have kept it
here thus far in case anyone else is interested in this info. BTW, I am
a nutritionist in private practice and before private practice was a
hospital dietitian and have worked extensively with this
population....but don't rely on the hospital dietitian! Few are as
interested in health as I am; most just "go by the book" and the "book"
is hopelessly out of date. They are what I call mathematical
dietitians....forever counting and adding and subtracting things.....and
forget these are actual humans with a will and desires and tastes.
