RE: [AlpacaTalk] Blood sample for ARI registry

On that DNA card - remember the drop(s) have to be big enough to fill the whole circle - it ends up being more than 1 drop usually.

Hi Chrys,
We just did 3 of our young ones this weekend.  My advice would be to do it when they are just crias.  These 3 were from our Summer, 2009 crias so they were big enough to give us a fight.
I read on one of these sites that the device used by diabetics to check their blood is a good one to use. We found out that the plastic cap doesn't allow the needle to come out far enough so we took that off and just stuck them with the needle. The important thing is that it is a VERY fine needle so does not hurt them, just a quick sting.  We used the vein under the tail, squeezed it a little to get the blood flow going, stuck them with the needle, then had to squeeze a little more to get a blood drop.  Does that make sense??  Kind of a squeeze, kind of a massage.  Like you would do if you poked your own finger and wanted the blood to come out.  Be patient, it takes a few squeezes to get a blood drop out but it does work.
And once it is done they are off and gone and forget about it quickly.
Otherwise, you wait til someday when you are cutting their toenails, cut too close and draw blood..done that before, too.
Just take a deep breath and do it.  You'll be surprised at all the things you can do and save yourself a vet bill!!!

Has anyone ever done the blood sample themselves for the ARI registry? Can you give me some input as to how this is to be done? I would like to avoid a vet visit.
